For tradesmen the hourly rate is at least 10 bucks an hour better than what you'd get in perth and also you can do 84 hours a week every week which you can very rarely do in perth.. travel to/from site is 1.5 hours on a plane and it's paid...

I'm a tradie, used to do FIFO in Queensland (not for an extended period of time) and came to the conclusion that its really not worth the extra coin.

in reality Lennox, you are doing all those hours and having the hardship of being away from family for a lousy $500 a week in the hand.

I'm sure its the same in W.A., in Queensland the mining company's use labor hire company's to source their workers.

The worker suffers by getting a lower hourly rate because the greedy labor hire mobs are taking the cream off the top

Uh no. I'm my experience the labour hire mobs are getting screwed hard on their hourly rate. When you factor in the cost of compliance to the Resources companies practices/policies and the levels of insurance they are required to carry (workers comp/public liability and professional indemnity the cream ain't that creamy)

I was personally required to carry 30mil in professional indemnity when contracting directly to Rio Tinto and I can tell you I was working for a couple of months a year just to cover that.

$500 lol. When I was doing 4 and 1 it was over 120k a year more than what I was earning in perth. Now I do a little friendlier roster it's currently weighing in at 86k more a year.

That's best case cream construction job on a big project which are hard to get onto at the moment.. "bra".

And you wouldn't get 84 hours a week at it most likely 45-50

I'm on a 4/3 roster (days not weeks), CAT1 so no bonus/uplifts/leave etc and we recently took a 13% paycut ... it's an easy job, just boring & not in the field I enjoy / have experience with, so, I'm quite happy to leave fifo and pursue the apprenticeship life in a field I enjoy
