Guys,

I've just contacted Atomic Performance.  They've sent me this info:

Our #306800 springs are perfect for your application - $360.00/set of 24.   Our springs do not bind on the retainer because we have our springs made specifically for the Ford engine and work within the parameters of the Ford retainer and the Ford installed height.

Their web page is:  http://www.atomicperformanceproducts.com/

I like the idea of sticking to the Ford installed height.  Is there a need to replace my current factory retainers after 100,000kms from new?

.

Retainers and collets can be reused.

Them springs are good. Not many out there better, and there not even that expensive.

I had Atomic on my BA and they failed at 15psi. The tuner was adamant it was the valve springs I had done 1 month earlier at another shop. Atomic was no use wasnt there issue they had never had a valve spring fail. Replaced them with crow and suddenly the valve float was gone. But it still wasnt the atomic springs just couldnt happen he said. Buy Crow mate.

Just playing devil's advocate here but were the removed springs inspected and confirmed to be Atomic?  If the previous shop was extra dodgy they might have charged for aftermarket springs but just put in stock ones!

There was also a bad batch of Nizpro springs around a while ago.

Guys,

Checking around, I learn that Crow has a set of valve springs that use the factory retainers and (I am reliably informed) do not rub the rockers.  That sounds like a good option.  I don't have the Crow PN yet.

It's Simon from Nizpro (03 9729 4295) who tells me that Crow sells valve springs that work with the factory retainers.  He seemed to like Crow valve springs.
