I'm not suggesting these fees to raise revenue... Only enough to cover costs of a road safey/licence course...And a number plate...I agree they do not contribute to pollution or road damage so a rego fee is probably harsh in terms of a whole vehicle rego... However the fact is they need to be policed like other road users...No red light running ... No drunk riding... No cutting people off or turning without signalling... This takes policing... And for the leisurely hobby or for the money saved evey day from no petrol costs on a commute to work paying a small $20-50 a year to contribute to police traffic costs and a number plate and paperwork is a small fee if it makes people think twice before jumping on their push bike to ride home from the pub drunk as a skunk or to ride in the middle of a vehicle lane because they have not being shown how to ride properly. The causing accidents... Also what happens if a bike rider causes an accident between a vehicle and a pole for example ... Firstly they would likely not stop...and be no way of finding them... Secondly who then pays the bills for damage?Ralph... How would you trace it? Does every bike have a VIN? How often do they need to have a roadworthy certificate done? There are f'wits in all walks of life on all modes of transport, the ratio of f'wits on bicycles is far lower than the amount of licensed morons driving around on our roads in registered vehicles. Which sort of kills the argument. Never ever in my life seen a bicycle been fined for anything except drink riding and that was over 5 years ago... They never have bicycle blitzes here and we don't have roadworthys done anyway so those factors don't play into it.The vin thing is a good point....Bicycle rego does have some flaws but a rider training course doesn't!!!! U gonna argue with safety!?? The fact is that majority of riders just have no clue here because they don't know what's right or wrong. Just use golf balls as you can aim them better.Maybe cyclists are better behaved up here? It used to frustrate the living fck out of me getting stuck behind a cyclist taking up a lane, eventually get past them and then stop at a red light...only for them to filter back through to the front to repeat the entire process again. But when you think about it it has bugger all impact on your travel times in heavy traffic. They always usually get well-ahead whilst you're stuck behind other traffic.But as for cycle couriers...they are a friggin menace. Great when you need to get documents around the city in a hurry but not so great for pedestrians.
