Space Saver Causing Fire

Theres an fg xr down the road that's been driving on a space saver for god knows how long and seems fine

I thought they came with the space savers. Not sure about the other models but the standard 09 FG turbo came with them.

They do seem useless to me with restricted speed limit and cheese cutting ability but when I first saw one I was thinking that they would make a good cooking plate for an open camp fire!

Just to clarify, ALL FG Ford sedans come with space savers as standard, FPVs don't because of the bigger brakes. The alloy spare is an option.

I bought mine off the lot so couldn't option it, was going to purchase one second hand but got too attached to the extra boot-space and already have the deeper boot liner so never bothered.

I guess this thread is a timely reminder that if you're changing your wheel size or fitting larger brakes, don't forget about the spare.

I have a BF2 with that ugly space saver. I drove on it for a couple of days with DSC etc switched on and didnt see any issues.

Hope Theresa sorts out the issues, that is extremely nasty especially when you have kids in the car.

All good I did have a genuine problem that was scaring the sh*t out of me but this site has actually solved a problem that tyre professionals and mechanics couldnt so im fine with a bit of smartarse at least I got a real saftey problem sorted so thanku I do really appreciate everyones help and it was the space saver being too small so I will get a propper wheel this week...

your space saver would have been close to the size of the other wheels, we do not how much difference the op has between her 20's and the space saver that was fitted or even what car the space saver came from

Yep, sorry I should of worded it better, I meant I didn't have issues with the standard space saver running BF2 18"s.

A good starting point would be to give us your tyre spec for the 20 something tyre and the spacesaver tyre. Its printed on the tyre, something like this

245/35/19.

Then its easy to calculate the difference. Then it might give us some idea as to when the difference becomes too much. You should have really switched the traction control off after the first time!!!,

As long as the spare clears the brakes, be it 17" or18" , surely it just a case of getting a tyre with the same over all circumference as her 20" tyre.

Hopefully the members on here from her town can recommend a great tyre shop to help her out.

Not sure if it's true or not but I was told that some models that don't have the LSD standard use the brakes to balance out traction issues if one wheel in sensed as spinning. Just a thought.
