Opened up both oil pumps that I have. The super clean low km fg pump had swallowed something so it's getting turfed. While it still works there are a couple of scratches in it.

 

The pile of sh*t looking bf pump is in pretty good nick. I measured it up today with the new gears and there is about 2 to 3 thou thrust clearance with no scoring in the housing. Tip to tip is only about a thou and a half and it's a bit big between the housing and the big gear but it'll have to do. If I was going to replace it I'd get a billet housing but that's overkill for what I'm doing.

 

I'm just waiting on a couple more pump parts, grind a couple of bits here and there and then it'll be sorted.

That's not great... Hopefully those scratches aren't too bad and it's usable. You've got replacement gears for the oil pump already?

I think you misread mate. It doesn't matter that the fg pump is stuffed cos although the bf pump is a bit dirty from baked on oil the inside is fine. The fg pump can go to the shelf or bin, it doesn't matter which.

My pump gears and backing plate are nitrided.

Mine are CUSTOM. My SPEC... 4340 selectively surface hardened to 62HRC. Assembled and modified galleries and pressure relief by Nizpro...

My thrust plate (when it arrives) is machined from 7075 billet and is hard anodized to 60 to 65 hrc. The gears are made from hardened then cut 4140.

 

When you understand how the pump works it's easy to see where material needs to be removed to increase flow through the relief circuit and also which parts can be massaged to remove ridges etc and smooth the oil path.

 

I'm also going to remove the various minute bits of flashing inside and outside the housing from casting, as they provide a stress point for cracks to start. There isn't much there but it's better to remove them than not.

So looking at the fg pump, I am going to assume that it is not usable at all, as it will let oil past at the scouring?

You could still use it if you had to. It wouldn't be my first pick but it'd certainly get you out of trouble if you were out of options.
