Can't see the wrapping doing anything for the gas velocity, I think it's just keeping the heat in the pipe & out of the bay. (eg, what the shield does a bit) Btw, anyone running a turbo blanket or something at all? pics? luke187 Member 297 Member For: 11y 5m 3d Posted 08/04/14 02:12 PM Share Posted 08/04/14 02:12 PM Both thermal and kinetic energy help spool a turbo, so its absolutely beneficial to keep heat within the header and turbine. This is why you see quite a few cars with ceramic and other thermal coatings on manifolds and turbine housings - not to mention keeping engine bay heat right down. Once it exits the back of the turbo, the only real (but still very important) benefit of keeping the heat in the exhaust system is to stop things from melting.Seems to be a lot of different opinions around it being detrimental to piping. Some people say thermal wrap causes the pipe to overheat, keeps moisture in, and a bunch of other theories. It sounds like the majority of premature failures come from too thin or cheaper mild-steel piping, either way if it were me and I had heat issues id be trying heat shields (you can get acl ones off ebay) first and or a ceramic coating.
