26/12/06 01:40 AM26/12/06 01:40 AM #1 Ok the car is an 03 BA XR6 Turbo 5 Speed manual. It has 53000-KMS on the clock one owner from new and is 100% stock. So its Christmass day and we have the cars doors open so we can enjoy the music from the premium sound system, three hours later the car won’t start, so we push it out the driveway and my uncle pops the clutch and she fires up. I believe his words were “Iam just going around the block to warm up the tyres.” So of course he has an audience out on the street since we just push started it and I remember thinking to my self I bet the old guy is going to try and do a skid here, even though he really does not do that sort of thing in his cars. Sure enough he winds up at least 5500rpm and dumps the clutch. BANG, CRUNCH, GRIiiiinnnnnd the thing went know were. He says the TC was off but I swear I could hear it popping away. At first we thought it was the gearbox but after collecting the parts of the road it looks to be the left CV joint at a guess. Is this common with stock cars? I knew that the modified ones were popping but I don’t believe I have read about stockers going like that. It’s a piss poor component, I can’t believe how thin the metal is, and it looks so brittle were its snapped. So are they expensive to replace and are their stronger ones available from Ford or from any where else?Piss poor from Ford that their cars drive line components can’t even put up with stock power levels. My thought is anyone with a Typhoon is just KMS away from breaking theirs. Thanks guys.LouisHere are some photos.
26/12/06 01:46 AM26/12/06 01:46 AM #2 I've broken 2 CV's now, one was when the car was stock as a rock, and it was doing the same thing being done here, too many revs and drop the clutch... though I did mine at Heathcote Raceway before my first ever run down the track... needless to say I didn't get to run it.Jack
26/12/06 02:20 AM26/12/06 02:20 AM #3 Is breaking CVs a manual thing or do autos do it as well? Which side is more likely to break or is there same chance of either? How much are they (from Ford)?Got me worried now, not that I generally go around doing burnouts anyway but maybe I might just buy one for a spare.
26/12/06 03:02 AM26/12/06 03:02 AM #4 Looks like your CV cage has exploded, leaving ball bearings scattered over the road. The centre piece sits inside the cage, which sits inside the cup, and the ball-bearings sits inside the slots in the cage, and between the centre piece and cup. Only one (not all 6) ball-bearings is shown in the picture. If you look at the inside of this centre piece you can see the slots where the shaft from the diff will slip. Can happen to stock cars, but mostly with cars that are driven hard, or raced at the drags, or driven by uncles trying to show off.Brian
26/12/06 03:30 AM26/12/06 03:30 AM #5 is there much grease in these cvs when it happens.is it black or yellow grease??
26/12/06 04:23 AM26/12/06 04:23 AM #6 5500 rpm, is a bloody lot of revs to be dumping the clutch, still what is more suprising is you did not roast the clutch.Scotty
26/12/06 05:04 AM26/12/06 05:04 AM #7 Author 5500 rpm, is a bloody lot of revs to be dumping the clutch, still what is more suprising is you did not roast the clutch.Scotty←Clutch was brand new.
26/12/06 05:07 AM26/12/06 05:07 AM #8 Dropping the clutch at 5500rpm is obviously not a great idea to start with. I think we should all be so lucky that Ford have made a weak point outside the diff area. Otherwise we'd all be breaking diffs, clutch's and gearbox's whenever someone has a lapse in judgement.
26/12/06 05:08 AM26/12/06 05:08 AM #9 Well look on the bright side mate, those typhoon clutches are pretty bloody strong. As for your original question, there are some strongers CV's but they apear to be prohibitevely expensive.Best of luck with it mate.Scotty
26/12/06 05:35 AM26/12/06 05:35 AM #10 So he tried to launch the thing from near redline in someone eles's car while cold, I would have atleast been nice enough to take him for a walk down the road and given him a hiding.
