How many times have you been travelling along the highway and had some bumpkin in a loaded up old ute or towing a caravan, brake test you by pulling straight out and powering off at 30km/h? Looking at recent events like those in Cronulla show that unfortunately in our ‘modern’ society people don’t give a crap about others anymore. Then there are the 'other' people do not see driving as complicated, because they do not know how to drive, they do not watch further ahead in the traffic to see if there may be dramas ahead. They do not look in their mirrors to see if there are divers approaching from behind, or in the next lane, they do not check their tyre pressures or clean their windows. They just drive at or below the speed limit because they have been told this makes them safe drivers. Combine this with fatigue…throw in a few grogs, an unlicensed driver in a poorly maintained car on a badly maintained road with far more traffic than it was designed to cope with, and the result should not be a surprise to anyone.Sure speed is a factor in most crashes but it is rarely the main cause of any accident. How many of speed every day, on a good road…in the dry … on tyres with grooves in them… without being over 0.5…in a registered, insured and maintained car, without killing everyone in sight? But all these other things take money, effort and planning to fix, ……speed cameras make money. ...so Australians will continue to die.

TheBoss Member 19 Member For: 21y 4m Location: Perth, Western Australia Posted 09/01/06 02:47 AM Posted 09/01/06 02:47 AM I think it’s to do with the population and the way people drive in Sydney! After visiting other states.I.e.: VIC, QLD, WA, NT and Tassie, people in Sydney drive like dick heads on the roads. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Well I cannot comment much on Sydney drivers, cause I've only spent 10 days driving around there. However I can comment on WA drivers cause this is where I live. The drivers here (well most of them) are having a laid back attidude when it comes to driving: 1. When light turns green, they sit there at the lights, hopping that it would turn greener before taking off, the poor driver who is 4 cars away is risking running a red light or missing out because the first car couldn't find the accelerator pedal. 2. People love sitting in right hand lane and don't take notice of the squillion of cars who sit behind them while they drive under limmit. 3. Then you have people turning into main roads not bothering to check for traffic, resulting you in having to ruin your tyres for their stupidity. Whats annoying is that they show no sign of remorse. So if you find Sydney driving too arogant, come to Perth here drivers are at sleep most of the time.

If speeding was such a big cause of accidents, I and most people I know should have died 10,000 times over by now! It's also annoying when so many people seem to think that if they don't speed and don't break other laws, then they're automatically driving safely.

Unlike cameras, they have a very visual effect, and can book people for many more things than speed. Just did 6000 km these hols and there are some dead set drop kicks out there on the roads, that I would love to see being pulled over and spoken to. Speed is not the cause of the high road toll. A licence is not a right and something that needs to be earnt. Cheers for reading my rant Scotty
