  1. I understand what you are saying, and agree with your philosophy. But I'm a hands on person and get more satisfaction from the fact that I was the one who put all the pieces together and brought it to life! I really don't let anyone touch my car with a spanner, It's just the way my father brought me up. Together we have built many top shelf cars from the ground up. And on the one or two occasions that we payed someone (very reputable) we felt that it was second class work, compared with what we knew we could do? It's an awesome feeling when you get it right and people ask who did the work.
  2. Wow! that's only 1.5mm. Are all the barra blocks (turbo, N/A, gas etc) the same casting? Ford were always good at getting the best value out of each casting. The clevo block was always considered to be seriously compromised if bored anymore than .030'' oversize. I actually had the block from my XB GT re-sleeved with chromoly siamesed sleeves, then furnace brazed in and together through the welch plug holes. Maybe its something to consider if block consistency is so varied?
  3. Hey guys, I'm about to give my BA mk11 2005 XR6t a full rebuild due to an oil pump gear failure, and would like to know more about the block bore size limits? I'm not familiar with the do's and don'ts with the Barra 4L engine, as I have always owned and built windsor and cleveland engines. I do however have a great understanding of engine building, but just need to know how consistent these blocks were cast and whether core shift was a problem like many other "thin walled" castings? I will be anticipating around 700+, running 21psi boost and don't need to learn about another "weak link" the hard way again! Also wouldn't mind knowing what deck heights others are running, as the block is going to need a quick skim due to light corrosion around the water jackets. I think the engine may have been overheated previously, as there was some migration around the gasket and mating surfaces? Cheers Ken
  4. Where did you get her? Think I need to go shopping there
  5. Has anyones wife complained constantly about how much more time you spend with your car than her? I'm on my second wife now, and it seems they are taught it in school how to feel second to a car?
  6. Yeah.... Everyone seems to have joined the 20 under club in my area???? Even with 4.1 diff gears I seem to be a gear lower than I should be lately? What the I <3 Bananas is wrong with people!
  7. I have had snakes since I was 11, and over the past 15 years I have been a professional breeder of the genetic mutations in carpet pythons. I have bred some of the rarest morphs in the country, like snow carpets, albino zebra jungles and axanthic jungle jags! Here's my first snow I produced, he was one of the first ever bred in the country. I could have bought a new XR6t with some of the offers made to buy him!!
  8. That's not surprising..... coming from a Kiwi! But seriously, they are the easiest pets to keep if you set things up correctly...... feed once a fortnight-month, only from October to April, nothing thru the colder months. They make great viewing in the night time with the right lighting in their enclosures, and will mezmerize almost anyone that comes to your house and watches them cruise or bask under their lights. Not to mention the "very" healthy price returns from selling surplus offspring each season they breed..... (helps buy the better bits for the car, without the Mrs crackin' the sh*ts!)
  9. I got a few pets that would be happy to keep a cat or 3 company! And they are very affectionate towards fluffy animals..... lots of cuddles!
  10. Just do it! Price is not to even become a factor in the decision.... I was told that my motor was fitted with a set..... It wasn't, and now I'm looking into the costs of a full rebuild, because of someones lies (while selling me the car)?? I would have fitted them myself if I knew they weren't "actually" fitted. If an engine can't breath, it chokes.... If an engine can't lube it dies, very quickly. Not a risk worth taking, trust me.
  11. Thanks for the offer, I might even take you up on that housing. I will remove the sump over the weekend and I will let you know. As for guides and chain etc, I agree with you about upgrading them. I have a pair of custom grind cams with bigger lift and revised durations, so it's always best to ensure that the timing components are not going to be compromised by the increases. Ken
  12. Unfortunately I got a little excited and ordered the new gears and titanium backing plate before I finished pulling it apart with the hope of getting them before the weekend. But as soon as I pulled the timing cover off, my situation became a little more serious... the oil pump housing is destroyed along with the left chain guide. I did shut it down within seconds and it was only fresh oil a couple of weeks ago, so just maybe I will be lucky? I will check the big ends once I remove the sump (which looks like a real *beep* of a job while still in the car!) So if anyone has any tips on how to make it easier, it would be much appreciated. Cheers Kent
  13. There's lots of things that fall into this category for everyone, but I would have to think that this would be up there for us all! When I bought my car, I was told that everything had been fitted to the engine/driveline to cope with the extreme state of tune it was running (21psi and 612hp at the treads.... there was even dyno reports etc) But on Thursday night, after fitting my new GTX3584 turbo and new injectors, and uploading a base tune to suit...I opened it up in 3rd gear, and instantly hit the limiter due to wheel spin. And suddenly I watched my oil pressure gauge drop to zero. I knew what the issue was as it dropped, but I took the oil line off the turbo and kicked it over for a microsecond and as expected... no oil flowed out. Why do people insist on bullsh*tting about specs when selling a car? I would have been happy to know that I needed to install billet gears etc, to prevent what could possibly be a complete rebuild. I just can't understand why? I had already agreed to buy it, before he spun a web of lies about components fitted.....
  14. Hey guys I'm just in the last stages of fitting the new GTX3584R that I built for my car, but was a bit curious about whether there should be a copper seal on both sides of the water cooling lines into the turbo? Cos there was only one on the cartridge side of each line in? But the seal/gasket kit provides enough to fit one on each side of the bolt/line in? Seems logic to fit on both sides as there is no other true form of sealing? Cheers Ken
  15. Hey guys, is there any way I can test what pressure my wastegate actuator is? It has no identification or numbers on it, but has an adjustable rod. I have just built a new turbo and would like to be sure that it is up to the task. And everything is new, including brackets, swingarm etc and I'm sure that I will need to adjust everything to obtain the right pressures and pre-load Cheers Ken
  16. So far, it's taken a lot more than the twin ceramic unit I destroyed last month!
  17. Not much left to go pop on my girl now.. I have had to replace everything in the driveline a couple of times, but upgraded everything with custom built stuff last time around!
  18. Don't do it!!!! It's extremely addictive And very expensive
  19. Hehehe..... me! Running 612hp @ the treads, with 4.1 diff gears and small 245/35/20's and I abuse the sh*t out of it, often dumping the clutch @ 5000rpm+ in all gears (including 6th!) It's a new addition only 2000km ago because I broke the pressure plate on the twin ceramic Xtreme that it was previously running (actually broke the pressed steel across the feet where it bolts to the flywheel!) The new setup is a Mantic twin plate organic track kit, I'm very impressed with the feel and the consistency of its launches off the line... Worth looking into, I know there are lots of really full on race type kits out there but I found they sacrifice feel and longevity. Where organic kits of this calibre almost feel like a factory unit, except for the slightly heavier pedal. (only 30% increase in clamping force, but good for 1250nm of torque)
  20. Hey guys, I'm just about to buy the parts to build my new turbo. As I'm getting close to fitting all the new upgrades before it goes in for a couple of fresh tunes on the dyno. I am building up a new turbo to 3584 specs, but have a few queeries about what billet wheel to fit? The options I have readily available to me are a GTX3584 11 blade billet wheel, and a billet a 7+7 blade . Both have slim noses & extended tips. But I would like to know the pro's and cons for them before making a decision. I will be using an A/R .70 housing with 4'' anti-surge, the exhaust is 4" from the turbo into twin 4" high flow cats, then 4" through to a twin 3 1/2" outlets from rear muffler (so back pressure shouldn't be an issue) It has a big nizpro intercooler and inlet manifold and hot side air filter and pipe work. It will be tuned to around 21psi boost, I have lowered my diff ratio to 4.1:1 and fitted a 3.35:1 first gear in my 6 speed manual to assist with the extra lag I'm expecting with the bigger huffer. Has anyone experimented between the two wheels, and what were the differences in the behaviour of them? Cheers Ken
  21. Yes they are both manual boxes, but both the 6 speed tremec as they are from mk11 2005 models Cheers, I will give Mal Wood a buzz.
  22. Hey guys I have just got home from working away for the weekend, and have had some gearbox issues in my BA XR6t. I'm pretty sure it's going to need a full rebuild due to the noise and feel of it. Wouldn't shift back from 3rd to 2nd initially, but then it started to make a very similar noise as a really facked thrust race... but I know its not, as the clutch kit is only 500km old. So I am suspecting it's an input shaft bearing or layshaft rollers? I have a BA XR8 6 speed with very low km sitting in my garage, and am aware of the different input shaft they use. But am curious if that is the only difference between the two boxes? (length, ratios, bolt patterns etc?) I need a quick turnaround getting my car back on the road, and was hoping to fit a new bearing on the turbo input shaft then fit it to the XR8 box and use it while the turbo box gets overhauled. Any help would be appreciated, cheers Ken
  23. Those numbers, are almost identical to my BA XR6t when running the 15psi tune... But it's not too surprising, as my car is also fitted out with a Nizpro cobra stage 3 package. And a few other little extra's fitted here and there. However, things become a lot more intense when the boost is turned up to 21psi and a 50/50 mix of 98 and E85. Turning out numbers of 612hp at the treads (almost 500rwkw in modern day talk!) It's interesting to see how consistent the numbers are, despite the varying boost levels. Just goes to show, there are many mods that can significantly improve the efficiency of this old tractor motor! It's a shame that Ford never discovered it's potential until the end of its production
  24. I'm in the process of building a new turbo for a friend to replace his worn out factory unit, but when we removed the worn out turbo to use the original turbine housing to use on the new setup we put together. I noticed that most of the bolt holes (dump pipe side) are almost stripped out. The new parts are a billet AR .70 compressor housing, with anti-surge 4" inlet, a new Garret GT3582 dual ball bearing cartridge with a billet wheel fitted. But now we will have to replace the rear turbine housing due to the problems with the threads being so worn, unless drilling and fitting helicoils is a viable option? If not, a new housing will be sourced. I have read a few articles about changing the AR size to a smaller volume to help the turbo spool quicker, but I don't have much experience with turbos. I would assume that by doing this, it would restrict flow at higher RPM (and possibly create more heatsoak through the turbo?) Has anyone experimented with fitting smaller AR.63 or AR.82 housings. Obviously the wastegate will still be ported to 38mm on the housing to be fitted. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Cheers ken
