Accuracy Of Trip Computer Readouts
My understanding is that the trip computer works off injector duty cycle to calculate fuel usage. This is why it is off the planet if you have bigger injectors and a piggy back ECU. I have typically found mine is out by approx 5% (higher fuel consumption on computer than actual fuel consumption) over obout 80,000kms. Really not too bad an indication. 3L/100km seems very large error. Average this out over 5 - 10 tankfuls and see if the error stays as large... cheers, Ben.

How To Lose $$$
Sorry to hear about the bad experience! You will find this forum very biased (with good cause IMO) toward the Capa Ford Flasher (otherwise known as Edit) product. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the best value approach to modifying an XR6T when coupled with a custom tune from someone who knows what they are doing. The results that are being acheived are simply fantastic. Lucky for you - you live in Melbourne and are therefore close to two of the best tuning houses going around for the XR6T in Nizpro and HPF. You can opt for an edit only (I would ALWAYS get a custom tune) rather than the full stage 1 dependant on what you want to acheive and what your budget is. Nizpro will charge a little more, but can offer a warranty, which given you current experience may be worth it for piece of mind. They also do absolutely fantastic tunes that provide good safe power whilst maintaining excellent drivability. Speak with these tuners about what you want to acheive and also about your current issues. It may be better to go your chosen tuner rather than Ford (if you have not done so already) to fix this - but speak to them about the implications. Good luck with resolving your current problems - hopefully this can be sorted without too much additional cost and leave you with a big smile! Cheers, Ben.

Whistling Noise
This is probably a silly question, but you did say you are not mechanically minded... This sound is not the turbo itself is it? ie it is not rev and throttle dependant rather than speed... Otherwise - see the above posts! Cheers, Ben.

Edit Tune
I beleive that Nizpro have generally found about 22% loss through the drive train is about correct. Cheers, Ben.

Great outcome Deano! As always - it is fantastic when people are happy with the result! I am sure you will have lots of fun with the extra grunt! Cheers, Ben.

Hanging In Gears
Depends on whether you are coasting or not... re-reading (or rather reading more carefully) the original post - I presume you mean coasting... Then there is the potential to use less fuel as the energy to keep the engine rotating can be taken from the drive train, in effect increasing the rate of deceleration of the car. If you want to maintain a constant speed, then my original comment stands... cheers, Ben.

I think the appropriate expression is... Assumption is the mother of all f$%k ups... So was he just ignorant? or ignorant of the upgrade potential of these T's? Alway nice to smoke'em! Not as much fun as an HSV though...

Hanging In Gears
I would expect higher revs will use more fuel. You still have to accelerate and decelerate the pistons, rods valves etc within the motor each cycle, and pumping losses will also be higher as you will move more air/fuel in, exhaust gas out at higher revs per unit time = greater energy loss = need more fuel (energy) to overcome these losses Cheers, Ben.

Tyres For The Phoon.
It is worth noting that the SP9000 control tyres in that review had done some kms already (about 10000 from memory, where as the others were all new, so not necessarily a fair comparo... As for choice, I have just put on the Yokohama Advan Sport V103's on my car (18's). Very very happy. Much quieter and more comfortable than the SP9000's with better grip in dry - I think similar wet grip although have not done much driving in the wet yet. Just be careful if you put these on - they take a 100kms or so to 'come good'. Price $419/tyre Treadwear rating is 180 relative to the 280 of the SP9000 so likely to get lower kms, although seem to be holding up very well after a bit over 2000kms, but really a bit early to tell just yet how long they will last. I am optimistic that I will get 20000kms (got 30k each set of SP9000's). Expect to pay about $620 or maybe a little under for the PS2 michelin's (I beleive I could have gotten a bit more off). Nearly went that way - but figured I would give the cheaper Yoko's a go first and see how they perform. Treadwear rating on the PS2's is 220. The advice I got was not to go the Bridgestones - never had them so can't comment from personal experience. Treadwear rating of the S03's is 140 from memory. Good luck! Ben.

1 Car Length = 37rwkw (50rwhp)
Great explanation Lawsy, and 100% correct. I think the other thing is dynamically many of the other losses such as aerodynamic etc can be worked basically as a power drain (conservation of energy). If you are not producing the power to overcome these, then no acceleration either... Cheers, Ben.

Factory Tyres With 18s?
The factory was fitting Dunlop SP9000 245/40 18's - I presume that they still are. I would look at some alternate options - I have just put on the Yokohama Advan Sport V103 at $419/tyre. I am very happy - higher levels of grip, lower noise, greater comfort and cheaper. Do not know how they will wear in comparison however (only done about 2200kms... ) Good luck Ben.

1 Car Length = 37rwkw (50rwhp)
Arthur, I suspect you have been sold some BS. without looking too deeply at the physics lets look at what we know people are getting, A stock T will do the 1/4 in approx 14sec with a terminal speed of high 90's (doesn't really matter matter for this rough comparison), with lets say 180rwkw. At 90mph you are travelling at about 40m/sec or 7-8 XR6T car lengths A modded T with lets say 280rwkw will do low 12's - lets say 12.5secs for the 1/4 (auto - although you are close Arthur!). For the sake of this very rough number exercise lets say that if the stock car averages the 90mph over the last 1.5 seconds of it's run (the amount it is behind the modded car), it will be about 60m behind when the modded car crosses the line or about 10 - 12 car lengths. Difference in power is 100rwkw - which using the 37rwkw/length would be a little under 3 car lengths. This is clearly orders of magnitude out... (for the T - might be true for something like a top fueller that is heavier and longer... ) As others have pointed out there are lots and lots of other variables such as where in the rev range - across how much of the range is the extra power made etc, so I would suggest that this as a measure of 1/4 time is useless for the T. Hope this helps! Ben.

Highest Mileage Modded Turbo.
Canna match that... done 93,000 in mine - First 60k stock, power levels from 265rwkw and up since then - once ya start ya canna stop....

What Is Stronger?
If you want a manual - T56 is the way to go which means a mark II, and uprated clutch. For auto either is fine - you may need a cooler and potentially some strengthening down the track. Happy hunting! Cheers, Ben.

Pinging, Pinging And More Pinging....
Valve springs will impact top end performance in particular, but the levels of boost etc should be set accordingly. I am quite sympathetic with the tuners - It is a difficult position as there are many variables that will impact the performance of the car after it leaves the workshop which they have no control over such as fuel quality. Having said that, barring a bad batch of fuel (or a mechanical failure), if the car is pinging, the issue is with the tune IMO. I would reflash to a 95 map or lower octane map, or go back and see the tuner if the pinging is as bad as reported (to minimise risk to car, and ensure all working correctly). Then eliminate the potentially dodgy fuel by driving easy or draining, and refuelling with 98 RON from a known good petrol station - if problem is still apparent then the tune needs more work! again - good luck and hope it all gets sorted. cheers, Ben.

Pinging, Pinging And More Pinging....
Well said! That is fundamentally the point of my original post - and that is that regardless of mods and their limitations - the car should not ping if tuned correctly for the level of modification - provided fuel level is maintained. Xtreme F6 - for the record - I understand that Nizpro have successfully tuned auto cars with completely stock exhausts to over 300rwkw - don't ask me how they acheive what they do, but I have been very very happy with what they have done for me - and see no reason to dispute this (just spoke with Dave at Nizpro to confirm that my understanding was correct). I am not trying to have a go at you - nor dispute that replacement of the stock cat with a better unit will free up exhaust flow. I also appreciate that he is not running a Nizpro setup, or an alternative arrangement to significantly reduce inlet losses, but the fact remains that the stock cat can be retained in a car that delivers higher power than the 240 odd rwkw that he currently has. The point I wanted to make was that the stock cat does not place an absolute limit on the power at around the 270rwkw level, like any mod - it depends on what else has been done and the particular car. Bottom line in terms of resolving Robit28's issues, I beleive the tune should be queried first and foremost given the pinging issue. If he wants to chase more power, then by all means look at further mods, and replacing the cat may well free the car up allowing a high power tune and do so the most economically from where he is. All good bud! Main thing is that he gets his car sorted and is happy at the end of the day. Cheers, Ben.

Pinging, Pinging And More Pinging....
The following link might be of interest... http://www.nizpro.com.au/cobra_kits_main.html The stage two cobra kit from Nizpro will deliver more than 300rwkw with completely stock exhaust. I am sure they have fitted a number of these kits with stock exhaust, and others like on my car with modified exhaust. Just because most of us at this power level choose to change our exhaust does not mean that the power levels are not possible with the factory gear - just less efficient. cheers, Ben.

Pinging, Pinging And More Pinging....
Okay - lets get one thing straight - the car can ping regardless of power level - the main variables that are likely to cause this are fuel and tune (advance). Regardless of the issues with cat and level of mods, the tuner should do their job properly and tune accordingly. My advice is sort out the car as it stands now first unless you want to do more anyway. Valve springs will make a difference with top end performance. I am running over 330rwkw on stock fuel system with little problems, although I am about to upgrade pump along with my next lot of mods. There should not be any issues with the movement of fuel - particularly with higher tank levels. Obviously there are variations in the performance and a fuel pump is not so expensive so if it makes you feel more comfortable... People are running standard exhaust and cat quite successfully to 300rwkw - I do not beleive this should be a major limitation, however modifying this the same as modifying the inlet plumbing etc will allow the car to breath better, produce more power and run more efficiently. Regardless - none of your mods or lack there of should result in the car pinging. If FIST cant get you a good tune - go somewhere else! Your car should be producing more power safely than what it is... Good luck! Ben.

Vic Spotted & Chat Thread
I'll second the great alpine Rd through Hotham and Omeo - best Rd in Vic IMO. Absolutely Awesome - some great open sweepers, some tighter stuff - about 220kms of pure bliss... However I would suggest the following route... Melb, Bairnsdale, Omeo, Hotham, Bright - stay overnight if people like - this is a bit over 500kms... Home via Wakefield, Mansfield, Black Spur - a bit over 400kms. Some good sections of twisty rd and not so much traffic, plus the spur. Sometimes if we are not too hungover, will come back the way we came, as the that Alpine rd is just awesome... I am doing this run next (as in this coming) weekend on the bikes weather pending (about 8 Mbikes at this stage) - if any turbos want to come along welcome to join in. PM me for details... But plan is as above - staying in Bright. GOR is fantastic as well - particulatly through the otways and the river flat at Glen Aire, but on a week end typically lots O cars - not much of a bother on the Mbike, but a bit of a spoiler in the car. My 2 c - all good though cheers, Ben.
