But it doesn't produce much power, therefore it takes time to get it up to speed. So a car that is running a 1/4 mile is required to produce both torque and power, to obtain a fast time. It is torque that is required to get you off the line, but power to get you over it.Unfortunately this is not correct. Torque and Power are not two separate characteristics of an engine that independently affect the way a car performs. They are both a description of the force that a motor applies to a crankshaft. The greater the force on this shaft, the greater the acceleration of the shaft's rotation (it will gather a higher rpm in less time). This force is the only thing that makes the crankshaft spin so therefore both power and torque figures describe the same property of a car. 1
