I was actually thinking about installing an external filter in-line by the cooler. Just use a fine micron one and change it regular. Seems suspended particles are the problem from what a mechanic friend told me. I'm not really sure on the life span of the oil though...or whether it even has one. I expect water would evaporate off regularly when the box heats up.

For what it's worth, you can get the exact same fluid Ford will put in the ZF for roughly US$6 per quart bottle from the US.

Motorcraft Mercon SP XT6QSP is what you are after.

One website has 12 bottles for US$81.99 + 65.00 postage, far better than the $40-50 per litre your Ford dealer will charge.

To further elaborate;

Ford Part Name - Mercon SP ATF

Ford Part Number - XT-6-QSP

Ford Specification - WSS-M2C919-D

Gulf Western syntrans is ZF approved and costs $120 for 20 litres so you can completely flush the box and still have some left over for a "service flush". I am running 324kw's atw and this fluid is superb. after 5000km's I have inspected the fluid it has barely changed colour.

I priced to get my oil pan changed to the ally one and get a filter and fluid change $800.00 o_O

Is there a tut on here and a location to get the parts I need? That Gulf Western oil sounds the go and I know a workshop with a good discount.

I paid $300 for filter, steel pan, gasket and bolts from ZF, $154 for 20L of Gulf Western Syntrans and $140 labor to get it fitted and flushed.

They used probably 17L or so, so it's nice and clean!

Rung Ford parts up today for sh*ts and giggles, they want $60-65/L for the transmission fluid!!!

Anyone know a good place to go to get a service/pan change and flush done in Perth?

Did some pricing around today and Ripco have the pan kit for $494.00nz and a 20L Gulf Western Syntrans oil is $250 at Autospot. Not sure how I would get on with the flush without the proper gear, I've never done one before. I wonder if ZF have an agent here?

Where is the best place to service the ZF in sydney! Its pretty hard to hold trust on some workshops these days, my last car had the 4 speed auto which I got serviced at a transmission specialist locally! then found out they were pulling a swifty with every local FORD dealership.
