Combined States Snowy Cruise 2011

Updates will be posted in this first post and the itineray may change over time as necessary - so please check back regularly on this first post

DATE: Friday 18 - Sunday 20 November 2011

Tumut.jpg

TIME:

VIC Depart 9am BP Wallan northbound on Hume Freeway

NSW Depart 12:30pm Mt Annan Shell, Waterworth Drive

ACT Depart 3:15pm Yass Caltex Truckstop Off Hume Freeway (meet up with NSW boys and girls)

DESCRIPTION:

This is based on Cro's famous annual Combined States Snowies Cruise and thanks go to him and the other Moderators/Cruise Controllers for their help in bringing this to you.

VICs start from Melbourne cruise up in a line up Hume Freeway to Tumut (525km approx 9 hours including lunch and pit stops). NSWs start from Sydney and cruise down along Hume Freeway to Yass then Tumut (396km approx 8 hours including lunch and pitstops). Meet up in Tumut by at least 7pm Friday night for dinner at reknowned Oriental Hotel in main street Tumut.

Saturday is the big day - start 7am nice an early for brekky somewhere in Tumut (bakery in town) then head off about 8am along glorious Snowy Mountains Highway onto some sweeping roads through gummed bush that eventually rises above the snowline bringing into view the barren openness of the Kiandra plains where you can actually see the winding roads ahead of you for miles and miles !!! Then its through the hilly country driving the lower plains for a late BBQ lunch on the banks of the Khancoban lake. Next head off for more gumline roads with a short photo opp at Scammel's Ridge Lookout. After winding past Thredbo ski resort, the road then descends through rock gullies and gum trees below the snow line again and eventually we reach Jindy and the legendary (for past events that shall remain unspoken) Alpine Gables Motel about 6pm for dinner and a good nights sleep :roflmbo: (284km approx 8 hours including lunch breaks and pitstops).

Next day Sunday is a late start with brekky in Jindabyne's main plaza then we all head off our separate ways. NSWs head towards Berridale and Sydney (460km approx 7 hours) and VICs get to do the snaking rock gullies again heading back towards Corryong then Melbourne (577km approx 9 hours).

All sealed roads for real this year (honest fellas :buttonit: )

Please be aware there are some incredible twisties on this route - best let any passangers know of potential motion sickness. :buttonit:

Also, please ensure you have a contigency plan if you have a breakdown - like a mate who is willing to stay with you if necessary or Roadside Assistance. And it might be a good thing not to have anything critical to do on Monday incase you need that extra day to get home for some reason :nono:

DURATION: 3 Days - Friday Saturday and Sunday As a courtesy to your fellow cruisers, please have a full tank at your first meet points. This is a long cruise - and it should go without saying that you can join/leave at anytime. 98 RON is not easy to get whilst in the Kosciuszko National Park, so ensure you fill up at Tumut on the Saturday morning. 98 RON is available from BP and Caltex in Jindabyne.

BRING:

Strongly recommended to have a UHF 40 channel CB Radio (almost mandatory to be honest) to keep across road hazards and general chatter. EvilDaifu has a few CBs for free loan on the cruise if anyone is interested - just PM EvilDaifu to reserve one.

Optional GPS so you know where you are, where you been and how to get where you wanna go :roflmbo:

Camera for the photo opps and the views.

Don't forget to bring extra batteries for your CB and camera - something makes me think we'd be chewing through the batteries on this cruise!

Sunnies :cool1:

Warm clothes - though it's November, it's still an alpine region and they got snowed in last time one year.

Bucket, sponge and some car wash liquid. There's a car wash at Tumut just up the road from the hotels - but nothing I noticed around Jindy - but the Alpine Gables does have a water tap in the car park which some of used last year.

3M clear contact tape (from auto stores) for your bonnet lips and maybe fog lights to protect against stone chips and cracks. Cro did a write up about it on the forum.

If you have an edit - maybe bring your flash boxes incase you need it - don't laugh I remember one gentleman broke down and had to drop his tune back to stock because

a. dust in his airbox

b. water in his fuel

c. all the above :surrenderwave:

Spare car keys

MOBILEPHONE COVERAGE:

SnowyCruiseTelstraNextGCoveragewithTelstraLogo.jpg

Optuscoverage2011.jpg

I think a few of the fellas who had Voda or Optus mobiles were struggling to get coverage on the cruise last year. Things may have changed though.

RULES:

1. Obey all laws whilst on the cruise; this means no speeding, no overtaking over double lines (no matter how safe you think it may be), etc...

2. There is a designated cruise leader who will lead the way and set the correct pace for all cruise members.

3. Use the Buddy system - always make sure you can see the car behind you. This will give people behind you an indication on where to turn to make sure nobody gets lost.

4. CB Radios - if you don't have one, follow the maps and directions given out. It is highly recommended to have CB as it enhances the enjoyment of the cruise being able to hear about road hazards and join in on the social chatter.

5. Please turn up to the meeting points with a sufficient fuel in your tank and enough time before the departure time.

6. Onus is on the owner/driver to ensure their vehicle is safe to drive on public roads and meets State road traffic authority laws.

7. Please ensure you have a contingency plan if you have a breakdown or unnecessarily delayed. e.g. Roadside Assistance or a mate in another car who is willing to stay with you if necessary.

8. This cruise is not to be advertised on any other media or websites or social media sites without prior agreement from the cruise organisers.

9. By attending this cruise you agree not to hold FordXR6Turbo.com, it's Administrators, Moderators, Cruise Controllers, or Owner responsible / liable for any damage and / or grief sustained (simply; you are responsible for your own actions).
