Hi Guys,

Just to let you all know that our caring government has started replacing old red light cameras with new ones and some of them will also serve as speed cameras to.

Was told by a friend few weeks ago that he saw the camera on corner of Cumberland hwy and St Jones rd at Canley heights go off when a car went through on green but I didn't really believe him until a more reliable friend told me he saw it flash when police flu through green yesterday.

I did some googling and found this from the local paper http://www.fairfieldchampion.com.au/news/local/news/general/local-red-light-cameras-replaced/1685727.aspx

Does anyone know more about this? Will there be regular speed camera signs posted before these red/speed cameras?

Personally I don't mind them, as long as there are adequate signs. I prefer this than cops giving fines when you go through a yellow.

I just hope it's still in testing phase as I regularly drive through the area at 5-10 over the limit.

Unless you take your eye of the speedo for few moments and and get done by the camera for doing 5 over the limit. That's the problem with speed cameras, and if there is no signs you don't pay that much attention. Police will probably not even bother pulling you over for doing under 10 but a speed camera will.

Canberra looks to slow driversMATT CAMPBELL

November 29, 2009 .

More 40km/h zones have been proposed for the nation's capital.

It could be the end of all that free-flowing traffic for Canberrans. The Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) is seeking public feedback relating to dropping the speed limit to 40km/h around shopping centres and community facilities.

The move aims to increase pedestrian and cyclist safety in the nation's capital. According to TAMS, the risk of death to a pedestrian or cyclist struck by a vehicle at 60km/h is greater than 90 per cent.

TAMS say that the lower the speed, the lower the risk: at 50km/h the risk decreases slightly to 80 per cent. At a collision speed at the proposed limit of 40km/h, the risk of death reduces significantly to approximately 30 per cent.

As with NSW, the ACT already utilises 40km/h speed zones during school times. Also operating in the ACT are 40km/h precincts in areas such as hospitals and universities, which come under the jurisdiction of those facilities.

A report conducted by ARRB Group suggests the lower speed limit would be most appropriate in areas with the highest pedestrian movements.

Sydney City Council has previously called for a blanket 40km/h speed zone across the CBD due to high pedestrian activity.

The ACT's Minister for Transport, Jon Stanhope, is urging people to have their say on the proposed lower speed limits.

Canberrans have until December 18 to voice their opinions.

Man that sort of sh*t fires me up. They recently dropped the entire Brisbane CBD to 40km/h to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians...HELLO, THE ROADS WERE PUT THERE FOR F*CKING CARS YOU F*CKING MORONS! Because of impatient idiots that either couldn't wait for the little green man to cross the road, or jaywalk, too many were getting mown down. I'm all for natural selection.

Farkin joke :buttrock:

Farkin Harold Farkin Scrubby...I'd drive up on the footpath if required to mow him down FFS :wtf:

Red light speedos ... that's gonna make running amber lights tricky. I can foresee these cams causing strong braking and rear-end collisions.

People generally know their location and approach and pass through the intersection about 10km/h below the speed limit. Common practice here in Melb, no more likely to result in rear end collisions than any other maneuver performed on the road day to day. Toss bags who don't pay care or keep a look out are a constant threat on all roads.
