08/11/08 12:20 PM08/11/08 12:20 PM #1 So there comes a time in every (most) mans' life when that certain time comes around, and I'm thinking I'm almost at that point. It's been five years with SWMBO, and we're heading off to Europe in May next year, so makes sense that it'd happen then I guess... Question: How much does one spend on a ring? Not wanting to go overboard and refinance the house to get it, but don't want her to be laughing at me with the bargain I got off Ebay! Do you design your own? Or pick one from a catalogue/display? Cheers in advance boys/girlsDan

08/11/08 12:45 PM08/11/08 12:45 PM #5 It used to be around 3 months wages but it really depends what you can afford. It also depends on what sort of chick she is. Does she like showing off and would she be happy with something under 1 carat???Lucky my wife is 5'2" and has tiny fingers so a smaller ring suited her better than somethin for a 6'0" chick.I would say stay under $5K as you can still get something great under that price that she would be glad to show off.Dont go D in colour and IF (Internally Flawess) as there isn't much difference to an E or F and a VVS1/2 to your eye but the price nearly doubles from what I remember. Some people pick their diamond and then get a ring made up to suit. that's what we did.I ended up taking my missus to design her own ring as what I liked she didn't but what she designed was awsome. We ended up getting the ring and I proposed a few weeks later in a Helicopter over the 12 Apostles. You could always just get a picture of a ring and put it in a box and do it that way so she could still chose her own ring. From what I found boutique shops that were in the city, Charles Rose is where we got all our stuff from, was actually cheaper and better than the major stores like Bevilles and the like. I thought it would have been the other way round but surprisingly it wasn't.The worst part was walking in to these shops with stuck up people serving, thinking their sh1t dont stink thinking you cant afford what they are selling. We ended up walking out of those ones.Anyways all the best and good luck.CheersJames

08/11/08 01:33 PM08/11/08 01:33 PM #7 I took her into a jewellery shop about 18 months ago and said 'tell me which one you like.' She picked a ring, put her own little spin on how she wanted the rock to sit, rock height etc etc. I said 'well, in a year or so when we have some more money I'll get it made.' and we walked off. The next day I went in and took another look at that ring... The farkin thing was $16,000! So I made it a little smaller and had it made. Easy as pie. I did leave it in my mum's safe for 5 months before actually giving it to her, then when we got home from our holiday, happy engaged, I went and bought a new F6 to celebrate
08/11/08 01:38 PM08/11/08 01:38 PM #8 Author Easy for some eh!!little tighter ship here, and I think I'd rather just rock up somewhere in paris/london etc with it and do it. then again, what if she hated it, fark! WHY DO WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS SHIIITE!!!!!
08/11/08 01:48 PM08/11/08 01:48 PM #9 Get her to design it mate, then it's her fault if she doesn't like it!
