Great news about fixed speed camera's in Queensland - they're ON THE WAY!

Yes - the revenue raising in other states was just too good to ignore..... Anna and Judy and the crew are now on the way to cash in big time. Reference to "reducing speeding in known problem area's" should be taken with a grain of salt - as the location of these camera's are NOT in those locations AT ALL.

FIXED SPEED CAMERAS TO BE ROLLED OUT NEXT MONTH: SPENCE

Police Minister Judy Spence, today announced fixed speed cameras will be in place at two locations in South-east Queensland by Christmas, with a third camera to be up and running in the New Year.

Ms Spence said the stationary devices will provide police with an additional tool in the fight to curb the state's rising road toll.

"These permanent fixed cameras are being introduced to reduce speeding in known problem areas," Ms Spence said.

"The cameras will be clearly signed, providing a constant reminder to motorists to drive safely.

Ms Spence said the three cameras sites are:

• Northbound on Bruce Highway at Burpengary Weighbridge;

• Northbound on Main Street, Kangaroo Point, between Shaftson Ave onramp and Thornton Street; and

• Northbound on the M1 at Tarragindi, between Birdwood Road overpass and Usher Road overpass.

"From December 14, the cameras at Burpengary and Kangaroo Point will be operational, and the final camera at Tarragindi will commence operation in January," Ms Spence said.

"Motorist driving past these cameras will see two signs leading up to the sites, warning of the 24 hour speed camera ahead.

"Anyone photographed breaking the speed limit will be subject to the same fines as existing mobile speed cameras.

"We're putting in these fixed speed cameras in high traffic areas, where it is unsafe or impractical to have mobile speed camera vans.

"This is about ensuring known black spots on our roads are covered - in short, this is about saving lives."

Ms Spence said contrary to popular belief, revenue from fines does not go into the police coffers, or consolidated revenue.

"Money raised by speed camera revenue is used directly to fund rehabilitation for the victims of road trauma, and for continuing to improve the condition of our roads," Ms Spence said.

"This is not about revenue raising, this is about saving lives.

"Fixed speed cameras are part of a range of road safety initiatives this government has introduced to halt the tragic loss of lives on our roads.

"Together with mobile speed cameras, random breath testing, new random roadside drug testing, new Q-cars and our tough car confiscation laws, people who put the lives of other road users at risk will have nowhere to hide."

(Note the reference there to Q Cars - unmarked Highway Patrol.)

Just the standard Gov Cop out. Adding more speed cameras makes money, fixing the real problem costs money and the Governments always take the easy way out.

At least with a fixed camera, you know its there. A little while back I had a stop over in Cairns, was walking out and about and I passed a automatic speed tax machine in the guise of a Black 4x4.

The operator of the camera had placed the camera in use sign right in front of the left hand side of 4x4 and parallel to the road so the only person that could see it where pedestrians.

Hidden signs and stealth cameras dont slow people down they just make money.

At least in the NT speed vans are easy to spot and slow you down, saying this I got pinged by one yesterday going around a slower car.

My list of thing to bring down the road toll.

1. better driver training and harder test.(you must be able to read English)

2. Retesting every 5 years and if you where at fault in an accident

3. better engineered and maintained roads.

4. Serial DUI offenders have their car confiscated, if its good enough for Hoons.

5. Stronger road worthy tests and more often.

6. stronger penalties for tailgating (the biggest cause of accidents) Can we have a tailgating camera working on distance vs speed.

Its been proven that speeding (driving over the posted limit) only causes 2% of accidents, where as excessive speed (not driving to the conditions) causes a lot more.

I just wish people would keep left if their gonna travel 10k's under the speed limit.

Nothing sh*ts me off more then getting stuck behind a stupid old cow sitting in the fast lane not going anywhere.

They need to learn the rules, it's funny cause they get angry at you as if you're in the wrong for trying to hurry them up.

On topic with the speed Cameras, the Government will do this forever, its easy money.. if I had an opportunity to gain easy money off suckers (the general driving public in this case) I'd bloody well do it! lol

As pathetic as it is, it wont change the speed cameras are never in dangerous spots anyways, Well at least over here in W.A They are all on our 100,110 zone freeways (2-5 lanes) Revenue raising please.

I'm sure it will raise them a few $'s...but anyone that gets caught by these fixed cameras should have their license cancelled for not paying attention in the first place.

Just another warm n' fuzzy ploy to convince the stupid electorate that they do actually care and are trying to fix the road toll; have never heard of any deaths in any of those places though.

In NSW we have cameras that watch the cameras as all the truckies kept spray painting them black.

For years we have all claimed they are strictly for revenue but that assertion is easily dealt with by ensuring that all speed cameras only effect drivers demerit points and no other fine is applied.

If you were on a 100K a year and copped one you wouldnt be too concerned about the fine but if you were a single mother struggling with money then the fine would have a greater effect. So they should only take points.

We out number them a hundred to one why doesnt everyone band together boycott the system and just refuse to pay any speed camera fine.....or is it's easy to bitch and whinge about it but harder to take action.....
