Oil Query

Funny this topic should come up now. I have just had a 30.000k oil change done on my XR6 T. Went through the hundreds, well it seemed that way LOL, of different grade oils to choose from. I think the type of oil you choose should also depend on the area you live by that I mean if it is a consistantly cold area or warm. If cold then you will need a thinner oil to get around an even colder engine and a warmer area will need an oil that will keep a thicker viscosity at higher temps. Also the mileage has a factor the higher mileage ones need a thicker oil. Could go on but I am sure you have had enough of my ramblings.

I change the oil every 5000km. At first I was using the "normal" Castrol Magnatec. Then one day as I was booking the car in for a service (about 30000km) and the dealer offered a full synthetic Magnatec so I started using that. Just had a 50000km interim service and asked the dealer to use the Magnatec full synthetic again and they ignored my request and used Edge 0W-40. Castrol actually recommend Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 so it comes as no real surprise that the dealer ignored my request and also Castrol's advice on what oil should be used. Probably the last time I take my car to a dealer for any work.

Nothing wrong with Edge 0W-40, but ignoring customer request is not really good enough. Magnatech is a semi-synth, aka synthetic 'blend'.

From reading previous threads on this, there is no standard oil used by Ford dealers - they will use whatever they make the most money on. My dealer uses 15W-40 mineral oil, despite Ford recommending 10W-30 for the NA engine. So now I change it myself every 10,000 kms (synthetic) and tell the dealer not to touch the oil when they service it.

I'm thinking of changing my oil to the castrol edge 10/60 or 0/40 .. just wondering what would be best to use down here in canberra??? It doesn't get too hot here, so I was thinking 0-40 would be fine..

Also, does it depend how hard you drive the car? would 10-60 be better if I am constantly driving hard and getting engine temps hotter etc?? I don't drive hard often at all, so I was thinking a 0-40 weight would be a good allrounder, especially when it starts cooling down again in winter.

Or is the 10-60 the best way to go? any guys with more experience in this would be greatly appreciated

I would like to here from the guys with Oil pressure guages and the pressure differnces on different oils. Otherwise this thread will go round and round.

10W-60 vs 0W-40.

The 10W and the 0W is the viscosity (internal resistance to flow) when cold.

The -60 and -40 is the viscosity when the oil is at operating temp.

The higher the viscosity, the higher the pressure should be. As such, 10W-60 oil should show higher pressure than 0W-40 oil.

I'm in Canberra, and have been using 0W-40. Might use 10W-60 now that I'm leaving for warmer climes, maybe even Nulon 15W-40. Crazy stuff.

Lets not forget about the multigrade viscosity oil properties though. The '0W' is when cold, the '-40' is when at operating temp. Both are just as important - '0W' for startup and initial running, and '-40' for blasting about.

Anyone with oil press guages and having used multiple vicosity oils, would be useful to hear from yas.

I use Castrol Edge 10w60 and work really well top stuff. remember

6.5L or 7L you need.

If only some performance shop would try both - do some sort of tests and make some recommendations based on the evidence.

It seems either oil is OK, but dammit which one it better. I'm a nerdy engineer and I MUST KNOW!
