Auto Transmission Oil Change

It certainly won't hurt it.

I've done 75,000km and I've changed the auto fluid 4 times.

I know its overkill, but I change my trans fluid every 10K's.

Trans oil gets bloody hot, so its cheap insurance.

If you drive it hard it aint overkill. I do the same - fluid change every 10,000.

Its a messy, crappy, yucky job that really needs to be done on a hoist to be done easily and cleanly.

Make sure you are not on a promise/rack action with the missus before you do this job, cause the fluid stinks, and if you spill some fluid on you, the missus will be steering well clear of you for a few nights......

You have to undo all the trans pan bolts, and as soon as you start to loosen them, the fluid starts to seep outside the pan (this is when the fluid starts running down your arm, and the promise with the missus goes down the gurgler). Once the majority of fluid has leaked out of the pan, the pan than then be completely undone, and dropped. Then you can change the filter. There is no drain plug on our auto's.

Generally, I just change the filter and fluid, and not worry about the fluid in the converter. I change mine every 10K's, so chances are the oil is still fairly fresh.

thanx for the replies. I will not be doing this job. ford are going to charge me about $160.00 for the oil and filter change. pretty bloody expensive but as you guys say it may be a bit of a job to do.

Dunno. But I've got the same whine in 1st, 2nd, 4th and reverse! New gearbox on the way from Ion. Car only has 62,000kms on it and isn't mistreated.

What's the standard Ford service intervals for the auto? I don't want to have to pay $160 every 10,000km for an oil and filter change on the box.

they change the oil every 60,000 km. check your manual, but this seems to be too many km's for my liking

is you box part of the warranty?

Ford charged me $300 for a full transmission flush and refill on my au.

geez that seems pretty expensive.

anyway I have had a chat with a guy at city ford in the city about the whiny 1st gear and he said that it is a common aspect to the auto and even if I replace it it will start doing it again.

Thanks for that. I might give that one a miss and just stick to doing engine oil and coolant myself. I hope that there are workshops that can do the change cheaper than Ford.
