Capa Flasher Unit Concerns

Why dont they just issue the bloody things with warning's....

Custom Tune is a must, generic aint worth the heartache.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Is a custom tune that much better? Settle down and hear me out, I'm not an expert I'm just offering my 2 cents worth.

I run the generic 8psi tune with no problem at all (except high revs at startup). No misses, no farts, economy good infact quite happy. Plugs are as Henry himself intended.

Tried 10psi tune, generally runs ok except for when I try to poor too much on too quick. It misses and farts but I have been told that repping plugs to .89mm will fix this.

I have spoken to a couple of others and been in a car running a customised 10psi tune, and to be frank "not impressed". I realise there are tuners and there are tuners.

I actually have decided not to have mine tuned, I'll gap the plugs, install the 10psi map, run against a custom tune car, have it checked on a dyno to see if AFR's are OK and if so spend my money elsewhere.

Remember when read this, these are my thoughts and that I realise if you have multiple mods a custom tune is the way to go. But IMO with a car that is stock everywhere else except for the CAPA flash I don't think there are big gains to be had with a custom tune!

Your comments will be appreciated!

Blow me away. I have had quite a number of PM's and emails from members that actually agree! Thankyou!

I think you misread CSI's post as he was referring to the tuner "blowing away" as in getting rid of, two of the generic tunes.

Regardless, I have been in a couple of otherwise stock "T"s running the latest generic 10 psi tunes and would have to say that it would be questionable whether the few extra SAFE rwkw's you may achieve from a custom tune would be worth the circa $500.

This obviously assumes that your car is running perfectly smooth with reasonable midrange power delivery and safe AFR's confirmed by a dyno run.

Save up for injectors, some form of cat / exhaust mods, transmission / clutch, and valve springs and get a similar gain to what the generic tune has already given you. That way the $500 or so you spend on a custom tune will be the best money you'll ever spend.

I would be checking for boost leaks around the hoses, it is VERY common to have a partially dislodged pipe, but so is the actuator.

I had a problem with my knock sensor that caused a similar problem on my xr6t when tuning, so a Ford dealer with a WDS could find this for you.

I think the tuner was a bit lazy and should have checked the basics before he came to the conclusion about the wastegate.

Damn, that sucks big time.

I also would have thought the Tuner could have done a little more to try and pinpoint the issue, of only then to get Ford to fix if too expensive/difficult :tease:

Good Luck getting it sorted.

Don't really understand why your dealer couldnt offer something other than a reflash :pooh: , that just plain ignorance.

Plus if you let him flash a new (updated from what is currently in it) factory tune into your car, your Edit box's F slot will no longer match the ECU's factory program.

Keep that in mind for the warranty factor :spoton:

Bottom line is the latest Generic tunes are very good, and most of the custom tuners out there simply tweak them a few percent to get the most out of the car...I know, I develop them on the dyno and then send them out :spoton:

However the tuner that wouldnt find the leak? Who was it? :tease:

I have avoided naming the tuner invovled until I know the cause of my problem.

He believes the problem is mechanical. However I do think he should have known more and perhaps offered more assistance.

I am posting the box back to CAPA today for reflash.

My point exactly, unless you are going to do injectors, valve spring, exhaust etc etc etc, there really is not much benefit of a custom tune!

I totally agree! Also Street Tuner do you suggest .80mm or .89mm plug gap with the 10psi tune. At present successfully running 8psi with std Ford plug gap!

I started this post on the 5th March and I have learnt a lot about XR6t's in that time, a crash course in T's, tuners and Ford service.

As my car is about to run out of warranty this month I wanted to sort out the lack of performance and introduce the CAPA unit to my ute.

The flasher unit has been returned from CAPA with the correct tunes installed.

Ford has worked on fixing a number of small problems under warranty and never quibbled once about it. They eventually replaced a computer (didnt ask which) as the fault codes indicated a problem and the lack of boost remained.

This afternoon when I went to pick the car up it was still on the hoist and the mechanic showed me the actuator rod for the wastegate that was no longer connected, as the circlip had long since departed. At last tangible evidence that supports the symptoms. Its in a bugger of a place to get to on a hot motor so I said it'll wait till tomorrow. I'll dream of 235rwkw, that should get me off to a good nights sleep. :smilielol:
