Some so called finance expert on the tv (may of been Ross Greenwood?) was actually recommending Telstra. Performance of Telstra so far has been ordinary to say the least. :pooh:

"Experts" seem to be saying the sharemarket in general is the place to invest at the moment now that property seems to have plateaued.

Sharemarket seems so fickle to me, a company may be going great guns with record profits and good strong growth forecast but then the CEOs 2nd cousin twice removed gets a cold and the share price tumbles! I guess I'm cynical because I had a few $$ worth of shares (3 or 4 different companies) that I bought just before 9/11 and of course when the planes started crashing, so did my shares. :fool: I held on to them for a few years and finally got sick of them and sold them for roughly what they cost (did make some money from dividends) and then shortly after they started taking off again! It's like somebody knew it was me investing and was just messing with me. :gooff:

Stick with Managed Funds - Telstra is actually not a bad buy just for the yield. NZ Telecom is worth a look if you want a lower PE and more growth upside in the same sector. Rinker and Westpac are worth looking at.

Two words: China, resources.

Virtually any company on the ASX which mines or drills has enjoyed solid, justified gains in the past 3 yrs. Shares are walking all over stagnant property at the moment.

Why? Because the fast-growing Chinese and Indian economies are consuming massive amounts of resources and sending the prices higher and higher.

My tips:

BHP (I hold, solid as a rock, wouldnt be surprised if they hit $30 this yr)

Zinifex (I want to get some tomorrow. Zinc is the metal of the moment)

Lihir Gold (the next metal tipped to surge and has been moving nicely of late)

Rio Tinto (3rd biggest miner in world; diversified)

When I sold my rear speakers the buyer was from Oxiana and he said they had been having record thoughput through the mills.

I bought some at $1.45 and 3 weeks later sold them at $1.99. The day after I sold them they went to $2.10.....story of my life. When I sell, people should buy LOL

(I also sold out of WPL at a healthy profit at $34 and they have since been to $43 plus)

I know the feeling Rik.

I sold Oil Search sometime last year only to see it fly up to 4$ of late!

Without question in the current resource bull market its a buy and hold strategy. Just a few days ago when the ASX dropped 70 I thought it was the start of a correction and sold all my shares...only to see the market return to that spot 2 days later!

Monday will see the ASX drop 50 so I reckon its a good time to buy if u put your orders in before trade and hope stocks go as low as thy order.

Good call

Market was down 70 at one point

My problem is once I see a stock run - ie when WPL kept advancing over $34.... I think"Oh well, missed that" but when they keep going, I could have jumped back in. Frustrating and has cost me almost $10 a share on those

I look at WPL now and I still think the same thing - has it got any more to run? Don't know.

I picked up some TOL - they seem to overcorrected the wrong way on some issue. Also topped up some QBE.

Still sitting on my OXR - but they owe me $2.05 so will sit and wait

Tempted to get some BHP

I have OXR too, Im happy to hold them on recent performance.

Today would have been a v.good to pick up BHP.

QBE is loved by Macbank so I think you have chose well there.

Any resource heavy portfolio at the moment is the go.

Zinc, uranium and gold are hot in particular so any company mining those metals is likely to be doing well.
