Simple do the check and car is yours, don't do the check and like everyone has said you could lose it. Should of been the first thing you should of done, even if the car cost $100 or $100000

Yeah, I did a check through VicRoads which looked very similar to the vehicle check when they did it and thought that that was it. It wasn't until recently that I checked the form again and realised it didn't say anything. Gonna do it now though.

You have to do the check through the Personal Property Securities Register. It's run by the Australian Government and replaces all the state run program's. It also now covers a whole heap of extra stuff other than cars. It's $3.70 for a check which is way cheaper than what a REVS check used to cost in NSW.

The PPSR is cheaper than those sites though. Those other ones charge big fees to give you crap you don't need. The PPSR will give you encumbrance, stolen record, write off record and registration record which is all you really need.

Well, checking the PPSR was an epic fail!

I paid for the check and it gave me a report that told me absolutely nothing!

I got this message...

"Search result

As this search was performed during the transitional period, not all registrations may be on the register.

Please note that during the transitional period there may be existing transitional security interests which are not on the register. For further information, please see Glossary - transitional registrations."

I contacted them about it and complained that my money went to waste. They just said that the search still proceeded. FML! :P

Yeah, that is a bit of an issue at the moment. According to an FAQ I read, the transition won't finish till the end of March. Not much you can do in the meantime as all the state run websites are gone.

Still no point paying for other companies reports though, they source the data from a PPSR check anyway so you're just adding a middle man in to the equation.

Just ask seller to show you finance documents showing the car is paid off. If he bought the car with cash he would also have a receipt for that.

If he has no paperwork then get him to authorise the finance company over the phone and then you can ask them any questions you like.

I did do this search through PPSR. What other options do I have to find out this info?

Just ask the owner, tell him you did the usual checks buy the systems screwed up at the minute, and does he have any paperwork etc to show its not held as security for any loans.

If he's got nothing to hide he shouldn't mind.
