I'm with you Gonadman2. All I can think is that the figures given in the ad are assuming total traction but in reality the tyres are breaking traction a little and releasing torque/load but not picking up speed fast enough to go into full-on wheel spin. I see where you're coming from. It seems acceleration is missing.

If it was all down to torque figures on paper to turn tyres into smoke, a diesel would be bloody fantastic at it.

While some can get the job done, it certainly won't be from a powerskid!!

So, dialling up 2500rpm and stepping off the clutch will cause wheelspin both with little boost and zero rpm.

Physics and engineering definitely isn't my area of expertise but I'm pretty sure RynoF6 is correct. Torque is a force (N) applied to a shaft (at a location measured in metres from the shaft centre). Force times distance, or Nm. It doesn't account how quickly it's done, which is where rpm is stuck onto the equation and you get power.

To answer the op's question in a different way I think that the car companies say stuff like XXX torque from XXX rpm to XXX rpm to actually describe how the car feels to drive.

When a normal punter reads that they think "Sweet it hits hard and pulls hard right through the rpm range" when they take the turbo for a test drive they stand on the gas and it spools up and sure enough they feel a huge shove from low ish rpm that holds strong right till the car changes gear and they think "ahh that's that torque from xxx rpm to xxx rom the sales man was saying" They probably couldnt tell you what rpm the feeling came on because thye were too busy hanging on and looking out teh windscreen for cops etc.

I really beleive that th advertised power and torque figures that car manufacturers put out have more to do with developing an impression of the cars performance and putting it on the right rung of the "performance ladder" so that people know what to expect when they go to buy the car.

Most average people would have no idea what a car of a certain weight and power would feel like to drive so they just assume that what thye are being told is true.

Look at how far off the flywheel power figures of the FG turbos must be when Ford say they only have 270kw but people have found totally std ones making 245kw at the tyres.

Just my 2c. :)

Yes . . . .. . . but you would still have less torque at the wheels than in first gear
