PLAYFUL Enzo, the miniature Australian bulldog, was stabbed five times and left to die in a Parkdale back yard by a cruel intruder.

Police and the RSPCA have condemned the killing of the loveable two-year-old.

Enzo's owners, who don't want to be named, told the Leader they first believed their pet had been shot but were told by a vet he had been stabbed with a knife.

Blood was found in Enzo's bed and pools of blood were found at the back door of the Nepean Highway home where he was found dead.

The pair, who have been left shaken, were not home when the attack occurred between 1pm and 6.15pm on May 21.

"He was a very loved pet. Very playful, very bouncy happy kind of dog," the owner said.

"We are absolutely gutted and want to bring the person who has done this to justice. The dog didn't deserve this.

"It was a gutless attack on a defenceless animal that might have been asleep."

Kingston Council said it had never received a complaint about the pedigree miniature bulldog.

Police described the attack as "brutal" and "aggressive" and are trying to establish if the intruder trespassed into the back yard with the intention of killing the dog or stealing from the house. Police said the house was not broken into.

Sgt Peter Brown of Mordialloc police said the dog had puncture wounds to its neck, side and right shoulder.

"It is really a sickening sort of killing," Sgt Brown said.

RSPCA acting inspection services manager Allie Jalbert said the penalties for animal cruelty were severe.

"It's a despicable act and one of the major concerns is if someone can do this to an animal they are more likely to do this to a person," Ms Jalbert said.

The maximum penalty for wounding or torturing an animal is 12 months' jail or a $12,000 fine and a charge of aggravated cruelty that results in the death of the animal can lead to a two-year jail sentence or a $24,000 fine.

Anyone with information phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Leading Sen-Constable Kaye Price on 9588 2988.
