In 1975 five Aussie journos were killed by the Indonesians when they invaded East Timor. East Timor was a tiny nation that posed zero threat to Indonesia and during WWII the East Timorese were our allies, they helped us fight the Japs.

I theorise that Australians are happy to be very minor players on the world stage, we are happy not to call the shots. The shots are called from Washington.

I feel we arent as independent as we could be. We are not as strong as we could be.

We should strive for a bigger population. With de-salination we can support more peeps.

We should occasionally disagree with Washington because I feel they totally take us for granted. (Yanks dont even know we were in Vietnam)

We should consider our own nukes so that we dont need the US or UK.

Look at our Canadian cousins, they have balls, they dont always do US bidding. Theyve got 30million and are in the G8. (They didnt attend Iraq or Vietnam btw)

And, personally, I think we need a new flag, Im sorry, the current one is not as great as it could be. We should have one of the best flags in the world. And, hey, why not throw in a republic (although I kinda dont see a huge need for one).

I'm just rambling but it disappoints me that we are seemingly happy to be pipsqueaks on the real world stage but masters of the sporting one - we can be both.

I agree with the rebulic debate, I dont agree with the changing the flag. As much as it sh*ts me to have another countries flag on our flag too many Aussies fought (my grandfather and uncle) and died under that flag so i dont think it should change...

I would rather keep our flag as it has been ours for a long time and we all like it. If people want the union jack removed, then add the abbo flag in place of it.

We should make decisions that affect our country for our country NOT to be part of a Coalition. The USA are self appointed holy crusaders with a hidden agenda and a lot to answer for.
