Zf 6-speed Auto Problems

My ZF just pooped itself last night at Benaraby. Havn't got it apart yet but seems like a bearing on the input side. Pick revs up it sounds fine but sitting at idle sounds like someone threw steel balls inside.

sounds like a loose driveplate if the noise disappears with a little load on it

ZF is in a different league to the BTR.

Far stronger and smarter. Some guys have had quite a few BTR rebuilds.

Can't say the same about the ZF.

Remember that these things start to go after the power output is raised significantly especially the extra torque. like anything mechanical you put too much load on it and it will break. Its a terrific box but I reckon people need to really consider upgrades on the trans if they are pumping out 100rwkw+ extra from stock, which is a heap when you think about it.

50% more at the wheels than it shipped with is massive. It's what I'm going for, and not much further since I also agree that while some can run 400 with a standard ZF, even a stock box will fail eventually and more power means sooner death. Can't lay down over 350rwkw on the road very easily either.

I was running between 280 rwkw and 300 rwkw depending on the dyno and my failed in within a year(50000km on the clock). I believe that these ZF gearboxes aren't as strong as everyone makes out(that only my opinion). As more and more people mod there cars to 300 rwkw and more I think more and more will fail and opinions will change.

I think its also how you use it as well, if you constantly push the car you can expect it to fail sooner as well. Mine has 270rwkw which isnt much but a big increase over stock and I drive usually quite sensibly with one track day and the box has not faulted once. The car has done 110,000k's and have had the tune for a year almost.

I did about 50 drag passes with between 350 & 400rwkw, a number over 130mph and 11 flat.

Gearbox was fine, but I had it serviced.

If tuners are overly aggressive on shifts you will get problems, and more likely to bend (or worse snap)the input shaft when pushed.

Running 400rwkw and use it as a everyday work horse as am a carpenter and twisted the I put shaft till it wound up and snapped. Is on the way to wa and should get it Monday. Massive bang though
