Just finished watching The Battle Of Chernobyl on Discovery.

Dont be baffled by the propagandic bull :fool: and cuffle there is NO choice in the question asked....

When even the UN are fudging figures from a disaster of this magnitude it makes you sit up and think. :pinch:

I just watched that aswell. Did I hear right when they said those guys after the intial explosion stopped a further threat that would wipe out most of Europe?

There was a possibility that a second explosion may have happened if they hadnt removed the water from the cooling tanks below the reactor, they believe the explosion would have been over 100 times larger than that of Hiroshima and would have whiped out cities 1000km's away.

The UN was alerted by the swede's ringing to find out if there was a problem somewhere as they had noticed a signifacant jump in there readings (dangrous levels) around THERE nuclear plant... :pinch: ...the russians then thought it best to tell the rest of the planet 3 days after the initial explosion...

Wish I'd seen that, no discovery channel for me though, but aren't the new power plants nothing like the one that blew up?

Hardly. I don't think there has been a new Nuclear Power reactor come online since about 1975!

There have been advancements in research reactors which could be transferred to power ones I assume. Fast Breed reactors do not require nighly enriched plutonium for example.

But

Do you realy want to find out?

my single biggest fear about nuclear power is how it is run and who by.

I could think of nothing worse than a a power plant being run by a corporate entity with profit first and safety second. :crybaby:

Would HAVE to be government/CSIRO run with the power onsold onto private eneergy companies in my opinion.
