Cruise Control

hey guys,

Over the weekend I did a fair bit of highway driving to and from places. Anyways, I've never been one to use cruise control, but because of the amount of driving I used it to save fuel I've got a nasty habit of putting the foot down and using full boost when overtaking or coming to a hill obviously the cruise control doesn't use boost and accelerates a lot more gently then me!

Anyways, I noticed that when descending down a hill the speed kept increasing. Although, on occasions I could feel the car braking and the speed would stay constant. So it was very inconsistent. Some times it would brake, other times it wouldn't. it was a real pain in the ass!

Does anyone elses cruise control do that??? is it a fault?? I was under the impression that it should stay at the set limit. and I am almost certain that it used to stay at the limit... although as I said I haven't used it that much.

I just wanted to get other peoples thoughts, as I dont wanna take it back to ford again. Sick of them "needing" my car.. especially after last time 23kms of flogging to test an indicator switch

Auto or manual?

Auto will allow the speed to increase more as there is less friction on the drivetrain from the engine, but even in a manual the speed will increase with a big enough slope. No matter what the cruise control is doing if the slope is too much the speed will increase. Mine does it... some hills it holds the speed other slopes it will increase.

I've got a manual and it does the same as XXXR6T. I think its normal.

Its a manual. That would explain why it does it on some hills and not others. I'm not too fussed, I only use it a handful of times.

I use it everywhere, saves me accidentally getting speeding fines.

As it only works the fly by wire throttle the only breaking you will get is engine breaking which means if you are in top gear it will be bugger all.

Had the car up to 130kph a few times on some steep hills when it was set to 105KPH, the falcon realy should have the cruise control hooked into the ABS that way speed could be fully controlled

The only braking your cruise control will do is engine braking.

Yep, overrun down hills is only engine braking, no automatic brake application as you find on some of the Euros.

As for sitting on the flat, it stays spot on the speed within about half a km/h and up hills it does a pretty good job, dropping a few km/h at first then slightly overspeeding when it catches up. Down hills, I find it surges a lot, so I switch it off. I spend nearly all my time on the highway and use the cruise control on a daily basis. I would be fcuked without it!

If you don't want the speed to run away down hills, drop it down a gear or two.

Better than riding the brakes.

the BF 6 speed auto has grade logic which will drop down gears when decending to apply more engine braking.samrt idea IMO.
