Bought the exede shift light the other week for the T. I need to source an RPM signal. I was thinking of taking it from the tacko or off the ecu. does anyone know the colour of the wire to tap into.

Not having a manual is a major pain in the ass

I am not sure of the colour wire for the pickup, however I know that a few people I have spoken to have told me that you need a signal amplifier to go along with the shift light as the BA doesn't provide a strong enough signal for most shift lights to pick up.

Last time I looked into having one fitted at autobarn I was quoted $220 for the shiftlight and $ and around $140 for the amplifier.

Good luck with it, let us know how you go and if you can get it working without the amp.

The BA does't output a signal that's easy to tap into, Herrods have just started selling a module to output a signal for aftermarket tacho's and we presume shift lights.

9psi_eb is working on a module also and it will be affordable, can't say the same for the Herrods one!

You could always source a signal from the ignitor module... I did this in another car and it worked a treat.

I emailed 9psi_eb last night and he has a shift alert module almost ready to go that can be set via laptop and will also set off a shift light and should be under $150.00 ( not quite as affordable as I was hoping but still better than Herrods).

A module for Tacho's is still a couple of months away it seems.

Just took the signal from the ignitor module... I dont have a diagram of the ford ignition but there should be a signal wire you can use to send a pulse to the tach/shift light... depending on the shift light itself it can either use this signal or it needs to be combined using a couple of diodes and resistors... I honestly haven't looked at the ignitor system I dont even know how many coil packs there are!

BAs have one coil pack per plug(6) & the pack is driven by the pcm. I can give you wire color is u need, have a diagram, should be no drama. Also as far as using the tacho wire to drive it, you could probably use a bosch bim024 ignition module to trigger from a small tacho signal & amplify it to a tacho worthy signal, but never tried this. One thing to note if you are gonna tap into the coil driver wires is they will be only 1/6th of the normal signal. You normally tap inot coil neg which pulses for every spark, the coil driver wires will only pulse once for every 6 normal pulses, but a good tacho/shift light may have provission for this. commodores have 3 coil packs so signal 3 times more often than a ba will, but they also provide a tacho wire.

above are neg sides of coil

coil pos is common to all & is pink/green

Good stuff, that's the answer I was after... so the coil packs are switched by the computer and not ignitor modules? I would have thought there might be a middle-man... unless the coil packs are designed to accept low signals to switch with.
