Factory Dump Pipe & Cat Replacement

Hi All,

I have decided to "tinker" with the factory exhaust. I've read thru many posts to sort the chaff from the wheat, and concluded that the factory exhaust's major restriction is the OEM cat.

To that end, I've fitted a three piece replacement of the OEM cast dump section / front exhaust section with a SMB 4 inch dump pipe, SMB 4 inch cat, then a custom twin pipe 2.5 inch mandrel section (starts with a 4inch section, 2 x 3 inch splitter, then into two 2.5 inch pipes) to join back to the OEM centre muffler and on to the OEM rear muffler and out the end...

I have seen the OEM cast section (which looks OK) it should flow well, but I ended up replacing it all with a 4 inch section, at it made it easy to fit the SMB cat. Also SMB indicated they had done dyno testing which indicated the dump pipe section was causing restriction at around the 350 rwkW mark. With the 4 inch section there was a significant improvement in top end torque, well so they said. BTW I have no connection with SMB, but I thought their system design had merit.

Anyway I have dyno runs of the car with the OEM system, and this Friday I hope to do a few dyno runs, to gauge if any improvements have been made by the exhaust itself. I will post up the dyno results of before and after. The car is fitted with a Nizpro Stage II and already makes 310 rwKw with the factory exhaust, so it'll be interesting to see how much of an improvement is made.

The way I've gone with the exhaust, I can re-fit the original exhaust down the track, as the new design is a drop-in replacement. I've posted some pics as well.

The system is as quiet as factory. I don't want a drony sounding system. I've discussed further changes with the exhaust bloke and a twin outlet system (with a quad of 3 inch pipes) sounds nice and from what I've seen of the Herrod system certainly looks the part.

Hi All,

I got the dump pipe and cat thru SMB in Sydney. They freighted it to me, and as it just bolts in, you could probably do the swap over at home (if your not scared to twirl a spanner).

Both are manufactured completely from stainless steel. To determine pricing check out SMB's website. I don't know if your allowed to post links to commercial sites here, so I'll leave it to you to use your search engine. SMB = "Special Mens Business". I emailed Grant Walker and he was able to do the items at a slightly reduced price than quoted on the web and included freight as well. His email is [email protected]

The twin section coming from the cat was made from two mandrel bent 2.5 inch complete mild steel pipes, with a SMB supplied flange at the cat end, and a exhuast shop supplied ford flange at the other. The work was done by Dean at Totally Exhausted in Wodonga Ph 02 60560547 and cost $360 (which including fitting of all the SMB parts as well). He can probably make more indentically so you can just bolt all the parts together at home.

Yeah that's quite expensive, plus freighting down to Vic.

Its very nicely made though - and stainless aswell...... looks awesome.

I dunno,

I think a member paid $1000 just forthe defilipo dump pipe. Took it back and asked for his money back. Quality not to good I think.
