Not if he wants to run the ZF, well maybe, I have seen a stand alone module that can apparently run the zf. Haven't found an example of it in use though. Their is a few different ways to sort out the speed input and depending on what pcm/ecu is used it could be simple or a pain. Dont think the zf has a provision for an external output shaft speed sensor but im pretty sure this standalone module has a speed output from the internal sensor. Wheel speed and road speed sensors are also an option.

Manual would be a lot easier. But anything is possible if he is cashed up.

Let me see if I can find more info on this module ive been crapping on about.

If you use the standard computer (easiest way to get the auto working) you will need to transplant pretty much everything from the car or it will not start, being an old car this will be a huge headache as you have kilos and kilos of loom and modules that just are not necessary for an older car.

If you run an aftermarket ECU you will not need to transplant much more than the engine/turbo/intake and can run whatever sensors you want, personally this is what I would do as there is just so much stuff you would need to transplant, also means you can make your own simple loom from scratch. The issue with this is your automatic transmission will not work so you are better off going either manual or an automatic box from another car that can easily be run from an ECU. If the car is going to be a daily there are some 3 and 4 speeds that you could easily get a custom bellhousing adaptor for, otherwise the manual would be the easiest option.

Any new ECU will do the job eg adaptronic etc are decent, much of a muchness. Personally I would ask whoever is going to tune the car what they prefer as this will make their life easier.

Adaptronic has a very easy interface to tune with.

I'd just go a manual and make your own loom to suit.

Also true flex fuel functionality is awesome

Unfortunately 6hp26 is still in development but apparently, according to another forum they have had one working so hopefully not far away. If your mate is serious it might be worth making some enquiries depending on how far away they are and his time frame it might be doable for him. If not I would just go manual and take your pic of a nice after market ecu
