What are the signs of incorrect valve timing?

Mine had the following:

MIL light on with codes P138 & P1386 (intake & exhaust cams too far advanced).

Idle worse than normal (which isn't particularly smooth anyway)

Otherwise it seemed to drive as normal. My chain had jumped one tooth.

some cars show absolute no signs for normal driving, but have seen 1 FG that was noisy at idle, another FG that ran really rough at idle and some will just trigger the engine light

My car drove fine with timing off a tooth yeah. I had no idea. Just a bit of rough idle, sometimes, which I put down to the old stock valve springs at the time. Could have been both, who knows!
