Guys,

I took the BF out a couple of times over the long weekend, and noticed on two separate occasions that it pinged as I accelerated...

I used two types of fuel, as I thought maybe it was a bad batch of fuel...and it still pinged...

On both occasions though, I was on the freeway at night, and my temperature gauge was literally half way between the "C" line and the first line...which is the coldest I have ever seen it run.

I have noticed that the car does run much cooler ever since I by passed the transmission heat exchanger with a stand alone cooler.

Would the colder temps make the car run leaner due to the higher air density?...and shouldn't the computer compensate by running richer?

Or could my problem be something else?

Any suggestions appreciated.

My old man mostly drives the car...and after it pinged the first time, I asked him what he put it in and he said premium 95 Octane...so I drove around a bit...and used that fuel all up...then filled it up with Caltex Vortex 98...then went for a drive long drive up the F3...

Noticed the car pinging as I joined the freeway when I gave it a boot full, as I approached100KPH.

I have a boost gauge on the car, so it wasn't boosting passed 5psi...

It's never done this before...and the only thing that was different in both cases was the cold engine temperatures...(not sure if that has any significance)

Let me know your thoughts...or should I just throw the car on a dyno and get a tune??

Mate if its pinging in 95 and 98. Take it to Ford if you have warranty.

Most people on here will say get a tune. I am one of those as you will not regret it.

But I also say let Ford fix it under warranty if you have it.

I ( from my own experiences ) found caltex 98 to ping when no other 98 does

Yes mines highly modified but ive proved this a few times , I stay away from clatex

And yes very low temps will initiate ping sooner than warmer temps

U may of just had the worst combo for ping at that time , may be a 1off time , might be something worse

Check it out by a good workshop !!

Thanks for the advice, as I usually run the cars on BP Ultimate, but thought the Vortex would be OK especially for a stock car...

You're possibly right regarding the freak of nature chance of running a fuel more prone to pinging, on a cold night.

Its actually the coldest I have ever seen my engine temps too...

I might put a tank of Ultimate in it and see if that makes a difference.

You may have a stuffed thermostat (jammed open) which is not letting it get up to normal operating temp.

Cheep to check out and replace if necessary.
