All colours fade. Just depends on where it is stored and how it is looked after IMO. I could be wrong though.

Most of the older red cars that are faded are painted in Single Stage as are most non metallic colours, meaning they have the primer and the colour, metallic colours have a clear coat (clear over base) that provides more UV protection.

Expensive Daewoo changed in the VE series but prior to that Im pretty sure they were still using single stage for the red and white.

If the new car price is extra for metallic, then its fair to say its clear over base as there are charging you for clear, if the non metallic are the same price then it will also be clear over base.

The other way to tell is if you get a applicator and some polish, if the applicator changes to the colour of the car then its single stage.

Now in saying all that

Single stage is pretty labour intensive to keep looking its best.

Clear over base, is a piece of piss.

Im not sure what ford use for there solid colours (red), I know Expensive Daewoo changed because of their export market to Dubai, the sun would kill them in a minute.

These cars look awesome in red, but I'd like to know what these "advances in paint technoilogy" are, that make the red paint on these cars less susceptible to sun damage. I definately wouldn't be assuming anything has changed, unless you know for sure. And I'd be taking extra precaution to keep it out of the sun because the truth is red fades in the sun easier than any other colour.

Btw, do you have twin white stripes over your car now, saw this near Canberra airport and thought "faaark, that's hot!"

driven by shine hit the nail right on the head, generally older red cars were a single colour coat, and no clear. same as majority of white cars, however the fade on white isn't noticeable anywhere near as much. any colour with even a hint of metallic will generally have a clear coat, and solid coloured cars usually won't.

not sure either at this point whether or not ford have cleared thier red cars, but its all up to maintenance. look after it, and it'll look after you.

Were you referring to my car? It hasn't got any stripes, just Venom Red all over!
