UNDERBELLY has set a new record for Australian television after the debut of its new season was last night watched by 2.5 million viewers.

That makes it the highest rating non-sporting program in the history of television ratings.

The first episode of the Channel Nine crime drama recorded the biggest audience for an Australian drama or comedy since ratings began, eclipsing Kath & Kim’s debut on Seven in 2007.

The Australian drama Always Greener previously held the record for the biggest drama launch episode when it attracted an audience on Seven of 2 million in 2001.

Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities has also outstripped the audience for hit American imports Desperate Housewives, which had an audience of 2.4 million when it launched in 2005. It was also more popular than Lost and Heroes, shows with budgets 10 times that of the local Screentime production.

The second series of Underbelly has proved even more popular than the first, which had an audience of 1.9 million when the delayed screening in Victoria is added to the figures for the other capital cities. Legal problems meant Victorians had to wait until November last year to see the program which was broadcast in the rest of the country in February 2008.

The coup is a much needed boost for the Nine network in the first week of ratings. Nine now leads the ratings week which ends on Saturday with a share of 36.8 to Seven’s 27.3 and Ten’s 17.7.

I thought adding the young Gatto was trying a bit to hard...But I was happy to see Mcpherson, Freeman and flannery. I hope we get to see a bit more of these three as the story unfolds....

Seeing as how I remember a lot of the stories from when I lived in Syd-a-nee I think things will hot up a bit as the series progresses.

There sure were a lot of head ferked crims in thems days & I'm sure the producers will be getting into higher gears next week. There'll be more shovel work from Burts boy for sure.
