Ford is full of sh*t, and they're trying to save on first servicing costs, and to reduce the on paper servicing costs of the car for marketing purposes (most manufacturers are doing the same).

Yes there's 'running in oil', but most oil manufactutrers don't recomend you run full synthetic until the motor's done at least 5,000. This doesn't stop you putting a fresh mineral oil in before then. The fact that Ford says they use a mineral or 'running in oil' in new motors prooves their full of sh*t. Long service intervals of 15,000ks, etc, are based on the oil life of top synthetic oils. Mineral oils don't have anywhere near the same life.

The most important reason for changing oil early on is to remove the swarf (metal filings). ALL new motors, being tight and having dags of metal here and there which are cleaned off during usage. There's always a degree of swarf in the motor, but it's pretty high in a new motor. Left in the oil, the swarf can cause scratching of the boore etc, especially if driven hard, and especially as the oil ages and looses viscosity. It's far better to remove the oil early (hence the recomendations by a few people here to change the oil before 3,000, then again at 7,000).

Mine's going in this weekend for 3000 klm service - I might just have to ask them to change the oil and see what they say...!

Does to the accountants.....

And fleet managers who look very closely at the servicing cost of vehicles over the working life of the vehicle.

Servicing every 15000k's instead of 10000 reduces the number of service from 20 to 13 (assuming the vehicle is retired at 200000k's, very rough figures here people)

7 services ea saved on a fleet of 200 cars reduces the fleet total service's from 4000 to 2600. 1400 service at $180ea (again rough figure people) reduces the fleet operating cost by $252000.

obviously all these costs are examples only but you can see how big the $ value of an extra 5000k's on the interval is, you can see we ford advertise that it can be done.

Free advice?

Take the oil you want to use with you. It'll work out cheaper for you and you know exactly what is going in your engine.

Spoke to my dealer today and booked it in for some warranty repairs and a 15000km service.I asked him about the log book having 7500km service and the 15000km services as I was told the 7500km service was optional. He now tells me that all turbo cars should have a oil change at every 7500km.If oil isn't changed at that point and the oil feed line blocked to the turbo and blew it ,you would not be covered by warranty on the turbo. The cost of a replacement turbo $3500.00.So people get your service guide stamped.

that's now 2 posts in a row were I have actually posted something useful .Whats the matter with me maybe I matured while away.Cheers Nick

What he says is correct in terms of looking after the turbo and engine but it is at odds with the servicing schedule as outlined in the manuel. Ford state that these cars require a service every 15,000kms or 12 months, which ever occurs first, so I do not believe you would jepordise your warranty by adhearing to this schedule.

That's crap. The owner's manual specifically says oil change every 15K or 12 months. So, you would be covered by warranty, no matter what it blows up.

There's plenty of members on here that recommend changing oil more frequently (including me). But taking good care of your car doesn't absolve Ford from their warranty.

this is for a fg falcon just looked in the service log book and it states every 7500km or six months after previous service, whichever occurs first, for vehicles operated under severe or unusual conditions. It also states replace axle oil in xr6 turbo and xr8 vehicles if operating the vehicle at frequent or prolonged high speeds at 7500km

So do the BA and BF books. Operating the vehicle at prolonged high speeds is more in line poliec vehicles but feel absolutely free to service your car every 7,500kms. Im sure everyone else on here reccoemnds it.

The servicing of 15,000kms is a BS selling point and when you buy these cars it is likely to be mentioned, however it is unrealistic and not safe. So Ford include this little sub-clause of "Prolonged high speed" to cover themselves.

The games Ford plays is pathetic and the reason this is my last Ford.
