The majority of the population voted for those laws because Labor won the election. Quite easily when you consider the swinging vote.

Unfortunately, once we've voted for a party, we can't then nominate which policies of theirs we agree and disagree with. You vote labor, you vote for all of their policies.

And yes, the alcopop and luxury car tax were policies announced prior to the last election.

Regardless of whether you agree with the policies or not, it's extremely irresponsible (and unethical) for an opposition to deny a mandated policy.

When has this country ever had an ethical and responsible government. All of the party members have to dance to the party tune, which in reality is mostly set by corporations and info from lobbyists. If we didn't have a few independents in the mix it would be a complete democratic version of communism.

It's self evident that all of the politicians lie to all of the people all of the time. Labour Govts are great if you don't want to be a wealth creator and are happy to prop up the so called battlers who often can't afford a decent car. All that Alcopop tax will do is get kids, and many more adults spending more money, and all the a luxury car tax will do is slow down luxury car sales. What a mob of genius's this lot are.

Direct your (unjustified) anger at the independents...they have the balance of power in the senate.

Good on them I say, just restores a bit of faith in our political process. A hung senate is an excellent position to be in, as proven by this.

Interested by your statements on the policies existing before the election, can’t recall ever seeing them.

Maybe they were some of those "retrospective" policies that they came up with now, but really meant to come up with during the election, or only a few people in the know actually knew about them.

I'd read that the Independents were going to block the alco-pop tax as well unless Labor could show evidence that it had curtailed teenage binge drinking, in the form of reports from ER Doctors saying less teens had been admitted to hospital with excessive drinking. Hey Rudd... good luck sunshine.

They were there TAB. Its just that Krud forgot to talk about them. At least the last Govt was good at saying "Like it or lump it", this new lot have no experience, Krud makes a better actor than a leader. When you start taxing the more wealthy too much they simply statr spending less. I think we are going to see a lot of stupidity borne out of innorance and inexperience, and many broken promises from this mob and we do need independents. And by the way I'm not aligned with any political party. I think they are all the same.

Good closing summation there doc - they are predominantly all crims worried about towing the party line and focusing purely on winning the next election to keep them in a job.

I'm all for MPs that aren’t too concerned to cross the floor to stand up for what they believe in. That’s why they are voted in by their electorate, to represent them, not just be a farkin puppet for the party machine.

I hope the alcopops tax gets the arse as well. That would have to be the most ridiculous idea ever, and anyone that voted labor knowing about the introduction of such a bill should be shot.

Hehe, I guess it's going to be thrown out too then.

Have a few friends in the liquor industry, They all say that while alcopop slaes have fallen a little, bottles of spirits have jumped dramatically.

Oh and a nurse cousin of mine has mentioned that there are the same, if not more people with alco poisoning at the moment. GREAT IDEA RUDD!!!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a staunch Labor supporter... I'm one of those 'pesky' swing voters hehe Whoever has the best policies wins my vote. Couldn't care less about who they are, what name they have, or what 'face' they've picked as their leader.

I completely disagree with the alcopop tax, I think its a waste of time and money. Its a ridiculous idea to think that young drinkers would just stop drinking if breezers and UDLs etc are more expensive... whatever... they'll just buy straight liquor and mix it themselves, which is more dangerous!

As for the luxury tax... I agree with it in principle. But don't agree with the $57k threshold. Since when was a $57k vehicle automatically classed as a 'luxury vehicle'. There's a ton of average new vehicles out there for the price. Raise the threshold to say $85k at the least and I'd be happy with those buyers paying extra tax... (there's barely any fords or FPV's at that price range :hmmm:)

Don't dare tell me we have to accept this government because they were elected. I certainly didn't vote for them. Thoswe that did were obviously blinded by the showboating, which concealed the fact that these jokers have absoloutly no concrete policies at all.

Considering there already was an existing, and excessive Luxury car tax, why did the same people have to be targeted again? The problem with Labour Governments is that they dislike sucess, and use the real workers as their targets. This current mob are worse because they are all about appearing to do something, while the real issues are avoided.

If they really wanted to free up some more taxes, they'd target welfare cheats. There's far more in that than raising a luxury car tax, but to do it they'd have to target the very people Labour seeks the majority of their support from. So instead of targeting real criminals for billions in fraud, they'd rather try an milk a few million more out of the very segment that already pay the majority now.
