hi

just a question, I was thinking of getting extrernal gate!

the mainfold is internal so obviously you would have weld it up to external?

has anyone done it? whats involved and how much would it cost?

you will basically need a new manifold, I can see bcl is watching, he will have some good comments for you I would assume, you'll also need a new dump pipe and (duh) the rear housing will probably need to be changed for proper efficiency

I'll assume you refer to an external wastegate.

The wastegate is internal, not the manifold.

I don't know of anyone that has welded shut the internal wastegate on the Ford, so that they can run an external wategate. I have done that on my STi, so I know what you mean.

Unless you are running in excess of say 420-450rwkw you would be better staying with an internal wastegate, but use a larger flapper valve.

I'd only run an external wastegate in conjuction with extractors and dual inlet entry turbo.

There are many mods you do before this one.

As Brian said, there are plenty more mods before you get to this! Like strengthening your engine for reliability for one.............

I plan to do this at some stage soon, it's another option other than the usual hogging out of the internal gate, that for, isnt a hard thing to do, but I'm not a fan of internal gates so I wont go any futher with the internal, but that's just me.

Opening up the internal gate and fitting a larger flapper is the common way to increase boost control

and works fine.

If you were to go for an external, you'll have to mod the manifold, its not a hard job for someone with the know how, but its no bolt on job.

First you'll need to remove the manifold, drill a big ( 40-50mm ) hole in it somewhere, usually in the colector area. Weld on a pipe with the external gates flange welded on the other end, mount the wastegate, make another pipe that comes OFF the wastegate and goes down to the dump pipe and joins into it.

Alot of work in deciding where to mount the w'gate and fabricating the piping to join it all up.

If your lost by all this forget about it, but if your keen go for it as a good external wastegate, say a 50mm TIAL, would be alot better than the internal gate.

As a side note, an advantage of this would be the ability to run low boost on a very high flowing intake/IC/ exhaust system... internal gates are too small to allow low boost on these high flowing systems.

Hi Drtyboost,

I have (done by Blacktrack not me) the external PSR 52mm wastegate with eboost.

As others have mentioned it's not a cheap option. In my opinion the internal with bigger flapper & accuator would have done the job. It does work great.

attached is some pic's.
