Turbo Boost Levels – Bathurst 12 Hour Event Easter 2007

The Event Organisers and certain competitors have requested that CAMS release a list detailing the boost levels for turbocharged cars competing in the 12 Hour Race at Mt Panorama, Bathurst.

In this instance, CAMS refers to Group 3E Regulations, Articles 2 and 6.1.10.

2. Homologation

…Cars must be homologated with CAMS once RVCS compliance has been demonstrated. Homologation will cover the detail necessary to accurately describe a vehicle without reference to workshop manuals, dealer bulletins or similar documents…

6.1.10 Supercharged/Turbo engines: The supercharged system must comply with that of the homologated engine. Boost pressure must not exceed that shown on the Homologation form.

On the basis of the above, the boost pressures for Bathurst would therefore be as specified on the Homologation Form submitted for each automobile.

Unfortunately, at the time of writing, some three weeks ahead of the event, CAMS only has completed Homologation Forms for three models of automobiles: the Evo VIII and IX Lancer, and the Subaru WRX STI, all being FIA Homologations. Upon further investigation we have also determined that the boost levels specified on these FIA forms are not in fact a maximum boost, but rather a reference boost for checking the boost control mechanism.

Boost pressures in contemporary turbocharged cars are managed by the engine control unit (ECU), and are controlled as a mapped output in the same way as fuel injection pulse or ignition timing. Under certain conditions of load, engine speed, temperature, gearing etc the ECU will map the turbo boost to achieve a maximum level, whatever that may be. It is important to realise that this maximum level will not be achieved under all operating conditions. With the freedom of ECU under the Group 3E regulations, simply specifying the maximum standard boost as an overall maximum will not reflect the performance of the standard car as it could be possible to map the maximum at all times, leading to some increase in overall performance. It is CAMS view that, in order to reflect performance relativity with the road automobile, the turbo boost of a Group 3E automobile will be set as a percentage of the maximum standard boost, providing manageability of the engine boost levels. Unfortunately, given the lack of any useful data in the form of Homologation Papers or details from the manufacturer’s concerned at the present time, the above desire cannot be effectively realised within the required time frame.

As an interim measure, for the 12 hour event, CAMS will publish a set of maximum permitted boost pressures based on a broad “Band” approach, where all cars of similar performance and specification will be assigned the same boost.

Band 1: High Performance. Boost typically up to 1.2 Bar

Band 2 Performance, Boost typically 0.8 - 0.9 Bar

Band 3 Low Boost, Boost typically 0.5 – 0.6 Bar

CAMS will research the automobiles listed on the event entry list with a view to assigning each car to a band, and will publish this data with the approved boost limit for each band next week.

It should be noted that these boost levels apply only to cars where the standard ECU is modified or replaced, or where a specific boost is listed as part of the CAMS Homologation. Other vehicles with unmodified ECUs will obviously have their boost controlled by the standard programming and system.

A. A 2 hour free to air special on the NINE Network, will be broadcast at 1.30pm on Sunday 22 April 2007 and replayed on FOX SPORTS, broadcast at 8pm on Wednesday 25 April 2007."

Not much coverage, especially when it wont end 5:45pm. Hopefully there will be some good highlights on the news.

The Phoon actually did a faster best lap than the XR8. The 8 and Phoon's best laps wer up at the pointy end too.

I'd say a lot of it comes down the the drivers though. Boost levels, etc aside, the Ts should out handle the 8s and be a bit easier on brakes.

Look at the names, all the top drivers are in the top cars, Bowe was in the XR8, the Astra has the who's who of Expensive Daewoo drivers, the Ts and the Phoon had Nevil Nobody's.

Wonder why Expensive Daewoo lacked the courage to put their VEs out to compete in a real world race.

Yeah, we all know what they needed to do to the monaro to get it to last (7litre le mans engine, hollinger gearbox and v8 supercar (aka ford 9" detroit locker) diff). Maybe the officials wouldn't let them have their own set of rules
