What Components For A Low Pass Filter

Featured Replies

Hey everybody,

I have a BF XR6 Turbo with the premium audio. I have upgraded the front speakers to Pioneer 2-Ways and the sub to a Fusion 8", but I still get some distortion at high volume.

I have noticed that the sub will do the lower frequencies VERY well, so I want to put a low pass filter in between the amp and the sub. I have researched it to death, but cannot find anyone who stocks the coil and capicator that I need.

Any ideas anybody?? (Before you suggest it, I do not want to (read - am not allowed to) change the headunit or amplifier.

the factory sub amp is low passing to the signal already. but if you want to ad a passive low pass then you can get the cap and coil from Jaycar or DSE.

for a 12db passive lowpass you need a cap in series and a coil in parallel to the speaker. By changing the values of the cap and coil you change the lowpass frequency. If you have a look in a Jaycar catalogue it tells you what values give you the frequency that you want.

That's what I did. Found the correct components in the Jaycar catalogue for a 12dB octave, 80Hz cutoff for a 4 Ohm low pass filter, however Jaycar did not make those components.

The nearest thing I could get was the components to build a low pass filter with 8dB octave, 120Hz cutoff - not much better than stock. I would like 80 Hz maximum, but preferably 60 Hz cutoff.

if you look at the scale you will notice that as one value goes up the frequency changes. you can work out what value you need by substituting either higher or lower values of cap and coil.

If I can find my Jaycar catalogue ill look it up and tell you what you need :gooff:

Jaycar part number to get your 60hz lowpass 12db 4ohm:

RY6936 = 400uf cap

LF1336 = 9mh inductor

Now I was wondering as I have hooked up my sub from my old car (rover tomcat)an infinity 12" to the existing wires which lead into the standard sub in the BAs how do I make this low pass filter and where bouts do I actually put it??

thanks!

Best thing to look at is the kits you can buy at Jaycar or Altronics which explain everything you need to make it and how to hook it up. There are also books available which explain it all in detail.

Thanks for that!
