what kind of power increse would I get by fitting a  4' magic cat? I have a stock BA MKI  T.  also would I come on boost earlier?

Hi mate. Because of the way the factory computer controls things, it will not allow just a cat fitment. The cat fitment will free up the exhaust, increase the boost and the engine management detects it, and puts the car into 'limp' mode, as it sees a problem.

You will ALWAYS need to get the factory computer 'edited' or a secondary device attached to the computer to fool the computer into thinking there is no problem.

Editing the pcm is easy, getting a good edit ( tune ) of the pcm is another story.

The subject has caused many a war 'round these parts....

thanks, where would I need to go to get it edited? anywhere in sydney you could recomend? what sort of cost are involved?

xr jim, I posted above saying I had my 4inch cat installed with the car standard, and I can't say I noticed much. Car didn't go into limp mode, I think the ecu simply retarded timing, as boost remained at 4.5psi at WOT.

To make the most of the gains, as mentioned you really need a custom tuned edit. I can't comment on the sydney side of things, but I'm sure some one will point you towards a good tuner shortly!

A bit exxy, just over $200, I know others have got it done for less.

Noise doesn't really seem to have changed, maybe under full throttle/peak revs but I haven't had a chance to test that theory yet!

Ross, where did you have it fitted mate? And which cat did you get, the 4" or 5"?

And has the car been running okay since installation? No overboost/limp mode issues? I was just under the impression the factory ECU program may not be able to cope with the additional flow such a cat would provide - thought an Edit was needed?

Powatone fitted it. I only had it installed for a day before getting all my other bits fitted and tuned so didn't really get a chance to give my car too much sh!t. Car has now quietened down slightly after the tune.

that's no good mate, surely that would be a warranty issue, and not the norm though?

Nah, clutch isnt covered. It works ok for normal driving, takes up very high though... slips if I drop it at 4000plus when its hot
