They have been trying to make flying cars for the last 80 years... (Saw a doco on it once...) they have had everything from a car which looks like a UFO (which could explain some of the so called sightings) to a cessna which you can take the wings off it to drive it in normal traffic... And they all fly with varing degrees of success, just none are commercially viable yet...

I remember seeing something on that UFO shaped one. But that wouldn't explain any sightings, since it was a hover car, and never got more than a few feet off the ground.
