06/01/06 10:41 AM06/01/06 10:41 AM #1 Well 2006 is looking just as fun as last year.... I just had an interesting time being smashed by cricket ball sized hail stones on my way home (complete with bits of shattered glass in my face and every panel except the tail gate on my ute being absolutely bent out of shape). So I figure that with the glass, cabin roof, both doors, bonnet, both front guards and possibly the stylesides; there would be a very large bill to fix the thing.I have full comp through AAMI - anyone else ever had a serious hail damage claim before? At what point do they decide that it cost too much to fix? Any guess how much this would be to fix?Any other similar experiences shared would be appreciated.Joel.
06/01/06 10:47 AM06/01/06 10:47 AM #2 Being who who frequents the insurance Co's damaged vehicle auctions, from the sound of the extent of the damage. I think you will find AAMI takes your car ute and gives you a cheque. AAMI are scrooges and their cars are always the ones passed in as they want top dollar for them.
06/01/06 10:52 AM06/01/06 10:52 AM #3 Sorry to hear of your damage there mate... terrible news. My car is at the panel beaters as we speak and will be all of next week too... not good. Most insurance companies will repair to 80% of insured value...I have seen friends cars get repaired that logically should have been written off but were within the allowable repairable level of damage... read:80% remember it is in their (the insurance companies) best interest to repair your car if 80% damaged because otherwise they are facing a 100% payout. It takes a lot of damage to get to 75/80% worth of repairs, especially considering it is 'cosmetic' damage ... meaning to panels and paint, rather than extreme structural damage... AAMI tend to be pretty good through the claim process though...Good luck buddy...Jack
06/01/06 11:18 AM06/01/06 11:18 AM #4 Faark sorry to hear mate. I take it you are in Brisbane?I think they spend up to 80% of the car's value, otherwise a write off. Either way no words could make you feel any better right about now.
06/01/06 09:45 PM06/01/06 09:45 PM #5 After what happened on the coast 6 months ago I think you will be getting a pay out with roof and all panels damaged they will deem it to much to repair.Ian
06/01/06 10:16 PM06/01/06 10:16 PM #6 Do you have any pictures of the damage? Would like to see how extensive the damage is to the roof, as that will be the major decision maker as to whether it is worth repairing or not... once a roof is damaged it is extremely difficult to straighten for the kind of money the insurance companies are prepared to pay out if not impossible.Once again you must be shattered, but at least you have insurance... plenty of people don't! Some peace of mind there...Jack

07/01/06 07:15 AM07/01/06 07:15 AM #9 Author Thanks for the words of support fellasI had the windscreen replaced today so that it is driveable again. There is some seriously massive dents that I would love to show but I do not have a digi cam (other than on the phone), or do I know how to load them on here. The windscreen repairer was stunned at some of the dents and stated that in his opinion the roof, bonnett, both front guards, and one B pillar would need to be cut out/replaced, and lots of labour on one door and possible replacement of the other.$€There would be at close to 50 large dents and perhaps more smaller ones that are difficult to see now that the surface is not flat anymore (this is a fari bit considering it is only a ute surface area). Three in particular on the bodywork are surprisingly bad - one that took paint off and made a 100mm long dent on the slope of the B pillar as it glanced off, one/several that has pushed the bonnett and passenger side guard in at least 15mm for a length of 200mm, and one that has about a 30mm dent on the strongest part of the guard where it bends.I think that they will fix it from what I am hearing. The assessor will be looking into it early in the week. I suspect the bill will be large indeed, and could only imagine how much more it would be if it were a sedan!Joel.
