First Service At 3000km

I just took my car in for its 3,000k complimentary service (Ford call it the piece of mind inspection).

They dont change the oil and filter - which surprised me, thinking that the running in period would be over - and in need of a change. This isnt done until 15,000k.

I have rung a couple of dealers - and they are all the same, including Holden.

I thought from reading posts here that you guys had the oil changed at 3000k is this only done in Aus maybe? ANy other NZ owners please comment too.

I think I might change the oil anyway - but just wanted your comments.

I get the oil changed (with filter) every 7500km. Given the low price of the AFL1 filter and when the dealerships are pumping the correct brew of oil at a fair price it's a very small cost for peace of mind.

I seem to rember the oil change at teh 3000km service was stupidly cheap.

Might be just salesman bullsh*t, but I remember being told, when I got my old AUII, that Ford pre-run in the motors in the factory. Maybe they change the oil before you get the car. Hope my XR's the same...

Just hope your Dealer is using the correct oil.

I hear of so many dealers here in Sydney using 10W/30 in ALL BA's, Turbo or not.l

I know what Ford say and what the dealers say but I'd still recommend changing the oil and filter at the first service. It is a small cost for peace of mind.

Now that my car has over 100,000km on it the oil and filter will be changed at every 10k instead of 15k.

After it reaches 200,000km the filter will be changed at every 5k and the oil still at every 10k.

The reasoning behind this theory for me is:-

The wear on the engine is at it's greatest during the bedding in period - first 2,000km. The engine then settles in it's wear pattern which changes only gradually until about 200,000km when there is an accelleration of wear can occur due to the looseness the motor now has throughout all the friction surfaces.

Of course these distances are also relative to the type of use the vehicle has, and the abuse it may suffer at the hands of an unsympathetic driver. I always recommend at least one minute warm up on first start in the morning and no WOT or heavy loading for the first 5km of driving from a cold start.

I asked them to change it at 3000km.

Cost me $66 for Oil and Filter.

Less than a tank of juice at todays exhorbitant prices.

Cheap insurance I felt.

Hey Cobrav8, You are right. The 3000k service does not include an oil or filter change even here in Aus. Best you will get is a top up if it's low. When I went in for my 3000k, I told them I wanted an oil and filter change.

The 3000k is just to make sure nothing is wrong with the car.

If I was you I would change the oil myself at this stage.

Thanks guys - though just as a grissle - you would think they could throw it in for free eh?

I guess if you buy and sell a car every two years - who cares, but for enthusiasts like a lot of us - we will probably keep for 5 or more - and actually want to look after our cars!

Yep, I generally keep mine for five or more years ..

My oldest is 50 this year. The next is 35. Then 28, 26. Then there's my new ones that are only 17 ... and 3 ... geez a real baby there!

Requested oil and filter change at 3000km "service". I too could not understand Ford's logic and was not willing to let a new engine go through to 15,000km before it's first change. I was charged $75 (AUS), oil used was Shell Helix 10W/30 with a labour charge of $12.50. Cheaper to do it yourself but at the time it was convenient.
