Typhoon, Oh Dear

As usual, the power is a let down.. but what about the brakes and dynamics?? I am wondering if the rest of the goodies outweigh the lack of go or if it's cheap AND better to get a stock T and add brakes and a phase 2 or 3 kit

It runs the prem brakes in standard guise, and yes they pull up way better than the stockers on an XR. In fact, I liken the brakes in the XR's to stomping your foot into a sponge cake, on the ones I have driven.... The car its-self is a good package. but runs stock XR6T injectors from what I can gather, limmiting the possible power output at stock ( F6 ) levels...

Lag, well, I had no issues with the evo, pulling from 1500-Revlimmit, strong.... and it would ark up both front wheels thru first, chirp second..

I can understand, NOT DEFEND the Motor journos for flat shifting the F6, The one I drove lagged for a second after every gear change, on hard acceleration, and trust me, I was changing as quik as my hand/eye co-ordination would allow!!!

I commented on this to the Rep, he seemed unfased by it, but it was there.

I step into the ute for a period of time, and yeah, it feels pretty quik, get back into an evo every now and then and damn, difference is amazing. Step back into the ute, twiddle your thumbs time.

Also pleased to note, I pointed out to the rep the diff clunk/driveline slap present in the Typhoon with 2000km's on it, also the clunky steering it had. Not nice for him I'd bet, but they have to know we know....

If you go the T then do a phase 2 or 3 just make sure you order the prem brakes. If you want a balls and all go getter, the Typhoon will be a disappointment unless you spend $5000 or so on it, so it can do what FPV alluded to before release.

I don't know why but I thought the typhoon had the brembos standard .... So what you seem to get for your extra $$ is a bit of wank value. As people are already talking APS kits .. just the same as a standard T. I think a standard T with AP racing brakes, decent suspension and a Phase 2 kit will kick a Typhoons arse all over the place. I think I might stick with the XR8

All of your assumptions are 100% correct. IMHO the Typhoon is no more than a tarted up T with some FPV crap on it that costs you plenty.

No Faster than a stage 1 APS

No better build quality

Nothing much at all except lots of wheeezing and hissing from under the bonnet and some wheels that look a little different, but if you scratch them your stuffed because they are polished not painted and the surface can't be replicated.

If the clowns at FPV had even half a brain they would have forgotten the "Mild Dust Storm" they labelled a Typhoon put a blower on the GT and called it a HO then charged an extra 20k for it. Would have sold like hotcakes I reckon

Slightly off topic here but I hope Ford DON'T release a GTHO because we all know that it will be soft and full of NCOs like diff clunk.

It might have a blower but probably still would be lucky to crack a 13 sec 1/4. :o

I think FPV need something that will crack 13.5's and still have the chassis dynamics of the current Typhoon, that is all that is lacking, it's a nice drive, just needs that bit more excitement!!

No-one should have to spend $5K on a Performance vehicle to get it where it should be in the first place.

My reference was to your specific comparison between a moded 12.5sec EVO to a stock Typhoon. The Typhoon can also be bought for less than $65k on road and I don't recall an EVO having climate control and a good sound system either.

Either way the EVO is a great car in its own right.

Back in '93 when the 3 arrived, it had climate, and power everything. sound system, mmmmm, maybe not.. and 12.5's was with exhaust and 1PSI increase in boost pressure. Modded, yes.

although horses for courses...

Problem is, the Typhoom WILL be compared to EVO & STI in the near future, car mags will not be able to let that one pass em by..

..

Although, I'm still looking at the Phoon/Tornado... It's not a BAD drive by any stretch.

you may all sit and bag the typhoon, but I truely think for an extra $1500, a unichip or exede or whatever you wish, and a good tune would truely make these cars come alive! I mean look what the xr T's do when modded, the typhoon has all the weakspots FIXED which limits the T such as valve springs and gearbox.

if you can spend 60G on a car.. why not spend 4500 extra and Phase 2 it.. then youll have a weapon!!

not to mention a car that chicks will get bent at the knee's over!
