Speedometer Cutting Out on BF MKII XR6 Turbo

Hi All,

 

I'm experiencing the speedometer cut out while driving. Currently, the car is a weekender and doesn't get used on the weekdays.

 

I started experiencing this issue when I was driving and I pushed the car hard of the line and revs needle will work, but the speed needle will cut out. I have been able to turn the car off and start it back up and drive normal and I do not experience any issues with the speedo needle working again.

 

I have tried to push the car off the line at different intervals in relation to the acceleration force. When driving normal from a stand still its fine, then upping the intensity by 10 percent increments it is okay.  I have pushed it gradually to about 50-60% acceleration. I have noticed when I go harder than that or like a heavy foot where I'm asking the car to pick up speed instantly, is when the speedo cuts out. 

 

On the cluster, the ABS and ETC light appear for the inital few seconds when the car is picking up speed and then dissappears, not sure if that is a signal to a related problem or problem identifier. 

 

Would anyone know what may be causing the speedo to cut out or where to begin with troubleshooting the problem?

that's a pretty weird issue... something to do with the throttle wiring, I guess?

I went to Supercheap on the weekend and had them scan the car for codes, and the error codes which came up were.

 

1. U1900-20 = PCM - CAN Communication Bus Fault -Receive error
2. U2514-20 = PCM - Vehicle speed signal missing or incorrect
3. U2197-60 = BEM - Invalid data for Vehicle speed
4. U2197-2F = HIM - Invalid data for Vehicle speed
5. U2197-28 = ACM - Invalid data for Vehicle speed

 

Has anyone experienced these codes and found a fix to them?

hmm, either your Vehicle Speed sensor isn't making it to the PCM or you've got other major CAN issues...

I know the car was tuned by BluPower from the previous owner. Is it possible that the tune would have something to do with it?

 

I've read that the things to check for are the ABS Wheel Speed Sensors and potentially swap them out. Would there be a way to identify which one would need replacing?

generally you can just clean the ABS sensors as they tend to get brake pad swarf all over them eventually, but replacing them is just a matter of trying one etc if that's your problem.... maybe take it back to BluPower to ask about it? I doubt the tune would have something to do with it, but they should be able to easily check if that's the case.

Cleaning the ABS sensors seems like a good idea as its an easy job and you can also check if the wiring to them looks ok.

Just an update on the situation.

 

I have changed fuses, and that did not improve the situation. 

 

I've taken the community's advice and I cleaned all four wheel sensors. I'm not sure how to upload images however the front ones had swarf which I cleaned with brake cleaner and that looked fine. I then did the rears and the left rear one looks worn out as I suspected as any time when I would apply accleration I would feel that the rear left was the wheel which was always lagging behind when applying the power down. On the right rear, it had what appears to be normal wear.  

 

My next steps will be to replace both rear wheel speed sensors if the problem comes back as I am yet to properly drive the car to the point where I can test the speedo to cut out under overtaking or hard acceleration.

After driving the car today and then driving the car hard on the acceleration of the line and while cruising the speedo has cut out and then I have pulled over and restarted the car, and it was all good.

 

My next steps seem like I will need to change the rear wheel speed sensors, given that the left one is surprisingly worn out more than what I would have expected for a car that is 18 years old with 140,000km on the clock. Dad had a 2005 December build BF MKI XR6 Turbo and never did we have this issue and that car did 200,000km.

Hi All,

 

Just an update. I have replaced the rear wheel speed sensors today, and the problem persists.

 

Any suggestions as to what my next steps should be? I have read other forums where people who experienced similar problems started with new speed sensors and moved onto coilpack's which fixed the problem. Would that be the next logical step?
