stretch4660 Member 122 Member For: 12y 4m 10d Posted 15/12/15 07:44 AM Share Posted 15/12/15 07:44 AM Good afternoonMy 2009 gf turbo ute seems to be getting a lot of over advanced and over retarded cam timing DTC's, just did a quick check on EOBD-II to see what the cam advance was at idle, seemed to jump between 12 to 15 degrees while idlingI then took engine revs up to a steady 1000 rpm, advance was steady around 17 degrees, as I added 250 rpm increments the cam advance seemed to be nice and linearMy question is at idle what should the normal cam advance be (I'm asking this so I know if I need to rip the rapper cover off and see if she has jumped a tooth on the cam gears)Cheers 1 Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/91488-timing-advance/ Share on other sites

Id be starting at checking the chain. Not sure whats normal at idle, I can check later Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/91488-timing-advance/#findComment-1573875 Share on other sites
stretch4660 Member 122 Member For: 12y 4m 10d Posted 02/04/16 08:08 AM Author Share Posted 02/04/16 08:08 AM Yep she's skipped a tooth by the looks of things, pulled the tappet cover off the other day, wound it around a sh*t load of times until timing marks on the cams lined up with the chains yellow marks and hey presto both cam gears were a tooth towards the intake side when the balancer is bang on TDC. Next question is where to go from here. Engine has done over 220,000km, is it worth sending the car somewhere, have them pull the engine and do a rebuilt for a few grand or try and find a second hand engine with lower km's and throw that in.? Is your guide missing some of the plastic too? Have heard skipping teeth can be provoked by letting off the throttle too fast at high revs...I have a bad habit of doing this. Rebuild? Mine's been fine as is for another 100,000km of 50% more power than factory. About to bust 300,000 this coming week! Gets flogged every day, just warmed up and cooled down, oil+filter at 7,500 (usually). Maybe just get valve springs tested while it's in for the timing chain? But hey a spare engine wouldn't hurt either hahaha. Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/91488-timing-advance/#findComment-1584591 Share on other sites
stretch4660 Member 122 Member For: 12y 4m 10d Posted 03/04/16 11:17 AM Author Share Posted 03/04/16 11:17 AM I checked the timing guide as best I could, as I didn't have the front timing cover removed and it seemed like the guides were ok. its a pain in the ass though because it's my ever day driver so it's hard to be without it, also living in central QLD a reputable workshop that I'd trust doing the work is over 300km away How much $$ would I be looking at for new chain, tensioner, guides, labour, n probably valve springs.? If a trip to Rocky is needed. Harley at Fatz Fab is a pretty good bloke who knows his way round a barra. He runs a GU with a self built barra in it. Couldn't recommend them enough, They do all the work to my Ute Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/91488-timing-advance/#findComment-1584687 Share on other sites

Is there anything to counter it * Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/91488-timing-advance/#findComment-1587299 Share on other sites
