I've just had to replace my bootlid because it was rusted out.

How it looked outside.pyzezubu.jpgyjy2ymeg.jpg%7Boption%7Dhttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/07/pa2e8yje.jpg[/img

How it looked from the inside.

The black stuff was me attempting ( in vane) to try and save it with Rust Converter, it was way beyond that!

It seems that there is a built in water trap with any Ford BA, BF and probably FG as well that is fitted with a rear wing.

My car is a BA Typhoon and I assumed it was leaking from the middle pedestal where they drilled the hole.

I thought this because the outer pedestal mounting holes have no access for water to get inside the boot lid cavity.

But I was wrong.

There are 7 holes in total for the outside pedestals , 4 holes for the mounting studs(outside) 2 holes for location pins(inside access to cavity) and a big hole for wire harness( inside access to cavity)

This is my old boot lid which has been sitting in my garage for the last week and yet when I removed the wing a fair amount of water came out.

If it has been raining or you've just washed your car and then opened the boot lid and seen water trickle out and run down the wing, then you can be sure water is getting into the boot lid cavity.

Now there are holes in the boot lid down where it meets the bumper that have rubber grommets with what look like holes in them.

Well they are NOT HOLES , the grommets are blind so if you get water inside that cavity it CANNOT get out!

The EASY FIX is to just remove these grommets!

But just too be sure I fish oiled my brand new secondhand boot lid and I will also try and seal up those holes.

Just one more thing though, the wing pedestals have rubber gaskets on them but they appear to have shrunk over time.

Mine were not sealing as I ran a straight edge across the pedestal and could see daylight in between .dytume3a.jpg

Anyway I thought I'd give you guys some warning as I live close to the ocean and the guy I bought the car off lives very close as well.

I've been right over the car and the rest of the car looks pretty good so fingers crossed I won't find anymore rust!

Cheers and hope you guys don't find anything to bad!

Good heads up - especially for those headed towards the end of the 5 year rust warranty

Every time I wash the car and open the boot I wait for that water to run out from the spoiler pillars so I can dry it off. Now it looks like I'll be removing the spoiler this weekend and checking it out inside. Already have fish oil and rust converter in the supply cabinet after I found rust under the skirts. Also need to remove front bumper and check out some spots I know are there. If I'm feeling adventurous, maybe fix the sagging driver side bumper...

Cheers Scrote!

Just an update;

I think I found the reason you get water trickling out of the wing when you open it.

I just removed a pedestal from the wing and ended up Getting a bit wet, there was about a cup of water inside the pedestal !

As the pedestals are hollow the water must be leaking into it from the top seal where it joins the wing and then dribble out when the boot is opened up.

But I dare say that if the top seal leaks then the bottom seal will too !

They can hold a fair bit of water, had to change my pants, LOL !

VY commodores do this too.

Best thing I could think of was to lift the wing off the car, dry all the contact areas and reinstall with a thin smear of black RTV/sika and wipe away any trace that gets pushed out of place.. that was 8 months ago and car still has a dry bum.
