Helicopter Noises?

Featured Replies

Hey guys

Just in need of some advise on what my issue may be.

Today, driving on the highway, cruise control set at 110km. I get this faint noise, kind of like a helicopter type of "whoo ,whoo, whoo".

Only quiet but gradually got louder over about 30 seconds. No noticeable pulling or dragging. So I give the brake pedal a quick stab to try isolate it and it goes away. It came back twice again during my 180km trip. Hard to pick where the noise was coming from. Sounds like a wheel out of balance kinda, and sends a minor vibration through the car. But always goes away with a quick touch on the brakes

Any body experienced this? I got a theory that it may be rotors warped and allowing the pad to begin to fall over and just touch the rotor, but that is just the first thing that came to mind. Front rotors are fairly worn, pads have done about 5000kms, rears I've never touched since I've had it and look to be in good working order. 4 & 1 brembos.

I'd be saying warped rotor also mate..

Had a similar noise once caused by a flat spot on a tyre however that never went away..

Don't rule out a wheel outta balance though.. Check your balance weights are still attached..

Cheers. Will bring home a dial gauge tomorrow and check my rotor run out and check all wheel weights. Hopefully I find a conclusive fault as I've got a 1700km trip to the tuna's in 2 weeks and don't need any hiccups.

Check your wheel bearings as well

I've never actually checked rotor run out before..... do I just remove wheel then reinstall wheel nuts to keep rotor in place and measure like that or do you do it with wheel on?

#6

Wheel off, all wheel nuts on and torqued in order to spec.

Measured up run out on fronts, 2-3/1000" at multiple spots. So not too bad but found the rotors to be more worn than I thought. To the point where the slots are starting to wear out and become uneven and were clogged with brake dust. So finally bit the bullet and ordered dba t3's, remsa pads and braided lines. Will check rears on the weekend. Also changed my noisy steering rack and pump. Car is sooo much nicer to drive now.

Will let yous know how it goes! Also if your looking at getting the rotors a seller on ebay called vic performance had my rotors for 522.50 plus 20 postage so I was stoked at that price.
