It can't hurt, especially if you are using a different rear housing from the original unit. The seating area may be a different size between the turbo and manifold, so the gasket will help take this up

The reason some manufacturers don't put one there standard is because the gaskets are soft and will 'squish' when tightened. After a few heat cycles they get smaller and go hard, so the nuts have less tension on them, then they unwind.

It's kind of funny that the nuts still come loose on a lot of them though.

I'd put it on there, and put some Anchor Locks or something similar on the nuts, haven't seen any problems so far.

Ford put gasket goo in between the turbo and manifold when they changed my actuator.

Best to just clean this off when I fit a missing bolt?

^YUP!

The fact they used goo shows the depth of (or lack of...) understanding the ford mechanic has regarding turbocharged engines.

Mine had a stainless gasket when I bought it. When I had the engine replaced it was gone. I asked about it and was told (not a ford dealer/mech) that the gasket expands and cools at a different rate to the turbo housing and manifold which lets the studs and nuts loosen off. I had lost the nuts twice before the gasket was on . Its been a year without the gasket and they have never come loose.

I just put mine back together and im worrying about the same issue but seeing as ford didnt do one I just cleaned up the surfaces and put it on. I took mine off for wastegate port and now the spooling sounds louder? so im not real sure if its due to the mod or if its leaking from manifold to turbo. anyone else noticed changes in sound after wastegate mod?
