The ford LPI system is not a direct injection system it is a port injected system just like the aftermarket injection systems.

LPG has 3 different forms of technology

The old style which most people are familiar with is the mixer ring style systems, these are the ones that most people associate backfiring through the intake system.

We then have vapour injection systems, these inject lpg into the intake port in vapour form. This style of system when compared to a mixer ring system is like comparing an efi car to a carburettor car. These systems can be quite good but it varies on the quality of the system and the ecu used to control it.

The 3rd form is Liquid injection, it uses new LPG injectors to deliver fuel directly into the intake port, in liquid form. When lpg changes state from a liquid to a gas it expands to approx 270 times it size and it also attempts to freeze, ever seen a gas leak or release etc from a BBQ bottle? if you have you would have seen how the gas starts to freeze. The freezing is now happening in the inlet port close to the inlet valve, it reduces the intake charge temp which can help lead a denser air charge and better spark advance.

Soon we will be able to get direct injection liquid systems, but they will only be able to be fitted to a car that has direct petrol injection fitted from the factory

So Mick with the liquid injection, in theory you could almost get away without an intercooler couldn't you?

in theory you possibly could, have not seen any body try that, but the main issue you will come accross is the IAT is measured in the inlet manifold and this would be before where the gas is injected, so the ecu would see these higher temps and pull spark out

I see this becoming more popular once the new lpi ford comes. and more guys opting for the after market systems to there current cars
